Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Sounds like the same people who say we shouldn't hunt, but instead should buy our meat in stores where no animals are hurt. Most Americans have gotten to far from understanding where food comes from. I miss the days when almost every family had a vegetable garden. Now if I could find a way to keep our chickens out of our garden....

I have nothing against guns or hunting for need, like the Native Americans once practiced. I have a problem with people that go out and kill for fun and use hunting as an excuss to go out and just kill. Those people scare me. They're just waiting for a chance to kill something or someone. I have run into some "Good ol' Boys" (as they call themselves) in the back woods, and I feel as if they were sizeing me up, or wondering if they could get away with killing me. I'm glad that I never go out alone.

I know! I hate that! I don't mind when they kill for food, but I hate when they kill something just to kill it!

Sometimes people just don't think.

We raise meat animals on our property from time to time. Chickens, ducks, sheep, pigs... And when my friend found out about this, she was very shocked and sad. She said "How can you just kill them? That's so sad!"

Now, she's not a vegan or a vegetarian even, so I was confused. I asked her, "What do you mean it's sad? Don't you eat meat?"

Her response was, "Well yes, but I don't know those animals!"

So then I'm thinking, "Okay so you're just being willfully ignorant so you can eat meat and not feel bad. Someone somewhere knows those animals. If anything you should want to know where your meat comes from. I feel much better when I raise and butcher my own meat because I know what goes into my meat, that they didn't suffer, and I know all of my animals had awesome lives before they died."

I feel like it's entirely too common for people to distance themselves from what they eat. Like meat just grows on trees somewhere.

Denial is *not* a river in Egypt.

This is a classic example of why Freud called it a "defense mechanism". Effective, no?

My husband is a Texan, he has taught our children to shoot, but only our son wanted to learn to hunt. He has shot two deer, separate years, and we ate them. My husband and I both think that hunting grounds you. It's actually hard to see the beautiful animal you just killed, but when you eat it and realize you can feed yourself in times of trouble, it gives you a sense of pride. He fed us many meals with those animals! He is proud of himself, as are we. Obviously, from these comments on this thread, it's something more people need to learn to do, unless they are Vegan. I love the post I read on here from Bruceh who said:

my rules are this.
1. raise any bird with kindness and humanly.
2. never name a chicken until you understand it's purpose
3. when you do a kill do it humanly and quick
4. thank the bird for the service provided to you before slaughter
5. use the bird for some type of food ( unless the bird is ill )

Which is basically the same for hunting. Only maybe not in the same order. Can you think of a better life than to roam free as a deer until the end of your life cycle (we only shoot older bucks, past their prime)

Well, anyway, I just wanted to say I don't think all hunters are idiots, and most really do love nature and see themselves as part of nature and the natural balance of things. Though as in all things, some people are not brought up with respect, and they are unwise and act accordingly, creating a bad image for the rest :)

Growing up I never really understood why so many people had a bad opinion of hunters. I grew up in a family that hunts and always saw it in a positive light. For some reason most of the people I know now have this weird belief that hunters are crazy rednecks who are so gungho about shooting things they're a hair away from shooting people.

Then I grew up and realized that there ARE actually crazy people like that. I've yet to meet one, and I've met far more respectful and responsible hunters. It sucks that this is the kind of opinion some people have. A few bad apples in the bunch really spoils it for the rest of us. :(

I guess this thread is full of misconceptions, huh? XD

Anyway, I like the fact that you say hunting grounds you. It really does. I believe the same thing about raising your own meat/egg animals. Feels good man!

me too! Someday, if we can move to a place with more room, I would really like to raise our own meat birds, but since we can't really have roos and have to constantly get rid of our boys, it's just not practical at this time. But I too feel raising our own meat would keep us grounded in the same way.

In the mean time, it's kinda all fun and games with a few eggs here ;P

And it's always Bob Knight and Dick Cheany's problems with loaded guns and friends we hear of on the news that's also how we get those ideas about hunters also

I suppose it's the general population's inability to think critically then. It's like hearing that a few people of a certain persuasion robbed a bank, and then thinking all or even the majority of people of similar persuasion are prone to stealing.

that's most of the problem some stupid people make headlines while the people who obey the rules suffer, But there always will be an element not acting responsible,
