the way its worded makes me think they mean roosters lay fertile eggs?????so a male's "deposit" makes it more nutritious? wow, that is all I can say on a family friendly site is wow........
That's what I thought!!!the way its worded makes me think they mean roosters lay fertile eggs?????
depends on whether you are only supplying yourself, or whether you want to sell them....I have 7 and we get more than enough eggs for my family...Does anyone have an idea of how many chickens I would need to actually get a good amount of eggs? 40? Is 40 a good number?
Thanks for putting my own thoughts into words....I have often laughed about the same thing.I have to add to this thread...and while it may not be a dumb comment, it is the most common thing people say when they meet my chickens.
I guess, to me, keeping chickens has just become second nature, I don't think anything of it, but I forget that there are TONS of people that have never even been close to a live chicken before...let alone have their first up close and personal chicken encounter be at my house with a chicken on their lap.
We've got 2 BO hens and they were hand raised in the house until 10 weeks, because they were my first chickens that I raised from day old babies, they got spoiled...spoiled to the point that if you sit down on my back porch, you are 100% definitely going to have at least 1 of the 2 hens hop in your lap for cuddles.
First off, an old friend came into town for a visit so she came over to see the house, meet the chickens, drink wine etc. She met the chicks that were in the tub in my craft room, had no problems with them...picked them up, cuddled them, told me they were the cutest things ever.
We went out on the back porch to sit and the 2 BOs came running at us...she freaked out, tensed up and seemed to think that these hens were coming to kill her!
I told her that it was alright, that they just wanted to say hi, and then they'd be on their way.
She sat down and both chickens immediately started casing her and the chair, trying to figure out the best way onto her lap, and hopefully into meal worms [at least I assumed that this is what they were thinking.]
Once the hen was up there, she started petting her, and this look of pure wonder crossed her face...she turned to me and said "OMG. I can't believe how SOFT she is!!!"
I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard, it's a chicken....covered in feathers! Of course she's soft! I didn't ask, but I always wondered what she thought the chicken was going to feel like.
But anyway, the most common thing I hear out of adults mouths are "Ohhhh, it's so soft!"
Which I find odd, because I've NEVER had a kid pet my chicken and say anything like that...it's like kids know chickens are soft, but somewhere between childhood and adulthood, they forget.
I get the same thing, and *green* eggs really put people off. But, I've decided that I'm going to start saying, "If the color bothers you, I suggest you not eat the shells". I'm also going to ask if they refuse to drive any car but a white one, even though the interior is exactly the same.
Reminds me of my mother when she wouldn't drive her new Honda because she'd "never driven Japanese before".

OMGoodness, you are killing meThis is an oldy. In fact, I've come up with an answer: When they tell you you have to have a rooster to get eggs, tell them, "Not any more. During the women's movement of the 1960's, hens were liberated and no longer need roosters to lay eggs".
Amen sister....that is exactly how I transitioned my family. He will convert, I find making baked goods with the home eggs helpMy husband is the same way...He says he doesn't want to eat eggs that come from the chickens....upon which I ask him where he thinks store eggs come from...he says he knows, but that he prefers the store eggs...to which I answer that I am not buying anymore eggs, and if he has eggs they will be eggs that I got from the chickens.
While I have had mostly positive reactions from people, can only add this to the topic. A long time ago, within the last 15 years or so I heard this statement. As I am not sure where or by whom but it resonates in mind still today and found it 100% correct. The statement goes something like this; "People will often criticize what they don't understand". At the time I heard it I never really gave it much thought. Then I was at a function and someone was pontificating about something in a critical manor but the more I listened the more I knew he knew nothing about what he was talking about. He was truly uninformed and believed what he knew(which was not much about the subject)and there was no changing him.
