Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I agree with you. My mother in law is like that about pit bulls. She says she saw a man on tv get bit my one on the face so now she thinks all pit bulls do the same.

I don't trust the owners of that and other certain breeds that can be vicious to train their dogs appropriately. for that reason I avoid certain dogs more than others, that being said I do not try to pet or get close to any dog I don't know, but I use more cation with some more than others.... I may be wrong but that's my choice, and I would like to be proven wrong more than to be proven correct.

I have a 13 year old neighbor and him and my brother were in the backyard while I was cleaning the coop. My brother was trying to convince him to hold one of them, but he said he was allergic. I was like, "what?!?" I am 90% sure he was making that up to get out of holding a chicken, but I'm not totally sure. Can you be allergic to a chicken?!?

Yup. Chickens and other animals carry "dust". (My dad is allergic to them) If you've keep some in your room for a couple weeks to a month you'll notice thick dust covering areas where the chicken is kept around.

yep x 2... I'm allergic to feathers. chicken, duck, goose... the down is really powerful stuff... makes for nice pillows and warm jackets, but makes me feel like I have the flu. I don't have a problem as long as they are still attached to the birds and the birds are outside... but then again, I don't stick my face in their fluffy butts either...

The schools really don't teach this unless you study poultry in an ag class. There's a lot you have to get outside the classroom to learn.
Most of THAT we had to go behind the school to learn....
I did manage to take an Ag class in grade 9 in a small town where we hatched some eggs, sexed and castrated the roosters (as well as studied bees, weed control etc) but then moved to the big city (Toronto suburb) and had to switch to Latin

Yes you can be allergic to chicken feathers! Every time I pick up one of my girls to inspect how well she's cleaning her feathers I need to go wash my hands and forearms. If not, I break out in hives within 15 minutes

You can castrate roosters? Does it affect their temperament or crowing?

Yes. Its not like a dog though. They are about the size of a kidney bean and are located under the spine, close to a large blood vessel. I plan on tyring it myself next year to grow my own capon. Its usually done at 3-5 weeks old age.

look up capon or caponizeing here you need a special tool and the nerve to do surgery on your rooster one must literally open the rooster up to do it... I won't try it and I helped "fix" bulls, It does eliminate crowing, makes them more docille and makes them gain more weight and makes the meat taste different more like a hen.

thanks, I didn't know that! I will keep my chickens away from my neighbor from now on! I am 12 years old and every time I tell someone I have chickens they ask a million questions.
I have also gotten the classic, "you need a rooter to get eggs" myth. Also when I told my soccer team at practice one night that I was getting chickens, one of the girls thought I said I was getting chicken for dinner. I'm like, "no, I'm getting live chickens, for eggs. I've also heard they make great pets." everyone thought I was crazy.
