Drives me crazy when people call hens chickens. I mean, they're all chickens!![]()
Love it. You should ask them, "Ok. I know the rooster is a male, but what sex are the other 2 chickens?"

what about 8 packs and 18 packs, also one store in our area sells 36 packs, so there are 4 different breeds then and one lays 36 eggs a day? oh yea there is a fifth breed that is wealthy and lays those eggs that have their breed monogramed on the shell EB right?Dumbest thing I ever heard from a nameless person who was thinking about getting chickens " we only need to get a couple chickens because we really don't eat that many eggs you know they lay 12 eggs a day" " that's why they have the dozen egg cartoons" I just walked away

You are so right, I wish there were more people that thought like you. I think the world could make it with little to none technology. It would make things a lot more unorganized, but before technology, people managed just fine.Think about how much tax money is spent on technology for schools, in my old school every student and teacher had a macbook or an ipad, there were macs in the library and every room had a smart board, all out of tax payer's money. Technology is actually hurting the economy in a way.we do have a few schools around here with greenhouses. but they usually don't teach a lot of useful information. I used to manage a nursery and we hired some students for the summer who had taken agricultural science. 2 of them would just water the leaves of the plant and not make sure the soil was moist. they also didn't know to break up the root ball when transplanting. they did know to use fertilizer, but didn't know how the different numbers affected growth. they would recommend a 10-40-10 fertilizer for someone for their lawn, that fertilizer is made for increasing blooms, which would in turn increase weeds. most of them didn't have an idea of what a micronutrient was.
I also see so many people thinking all you have to feed poultry is corn. yes corn will keep them alive but wheat, sunflower and other things will make the birds healthier and more resistant to even lice and mite attacks. people all the time ask me what I feed to get the size from my larger birds and how often I wash them to keep them shiny. they are amazed to find out the glossy feathers come from the feed and are not a result of washing/grooming. I offer my feed mix recipe free will to anyone who wants to use it. I have about $13 in a 50 lb bag. the only thing I have to add is grit and oyster shell simply because my feed mill doesn't want rocks in their mixing equipment.
from earlier parts of our conversations im sure you have realized money doesn't mean a lot to me. im more interested in helping people become self sufficient, educated enough to grow crops and livestock, and to be able to spot when a problem strikes, before it is to late.
pretty much anyone who raises chickens will agree with me when I say you get a lot more rewards from raising and growing things than spending all day entering data into spreadsheets. I was a technology junkie, I double majored in electronics engineering and computer information systems. didn't take me to long to realize all the technology actually makes our lives more complicated. I also realized I wasn't happy with my job, 8 hours of work just to make a difference in colors displayed on a screen. don't get me wrong, I do use computers to help me keep track of my stock, where it came from, how much it lays. but I also have a pretty good idea without looking at the computer.
maybe I am wrong in the way I think. most people are under the impression that you have to know computers and technology to make it in the modern world. fact of the matter is, a farmer controls the economy now. lack of food causes a raise in prices. lack of corn is even starting to cause gas prices to jump (btw sorghum has more biofuel than corn). if every computer programmer quit tonight, we would all certainly be affected. but most of us wouldn't starve to death over lack of technology.
Had a dream about this last night, was trying to convince the "President" of schools, that "starving artist" would always be starving but that "starving farmers" would never go hungrythank you Rachael. yea texas is a little far for a day trip LOL. but anything you need, if I can help I will. feel free to ask away. if I cant help I might be able to direct you to someone who can.
now I'm starting to wonder if I'm being a bad influenceHad a dream about this last night, was trying to convince the "President" of schools, that "starving artist" would always be starving but that "starving farmers" would never go hungryDreams are sooooooo odd!!!!![]()
This has proven true in the case of my three sons. They always gardened with me as children, but as teens and young adults they hated it and said they only gardened as kids because I made them. Now as 30 somethings they take great pride in raising their own food and having nicely landscaped yards and consult me for advice. They also thank me for raising them in a down to earth way with strick rules.now I'm starting to wonder if I'm being a bad influence. but I know I had you really thinking about it.![]()
I'm not saying that you shouldn't pursue a field in some sort of technology. there are so many problems that need fixing, and we do need people doing the research. but, I truly think proper farming will do more to fix the economic status than technology will.
if you offer to let a kid garden, a lot of them will. the ones who garden as kids will normally stop as teenagers, but start again later in life. they will remember a lot of what they learned as a kid. the ones who didn't garden as kids give up with failure a lot faster, they think they don't have the "green thumb".
