My whole family are cursed with what we call red thumbs. We buy beautiful healthy plants and do everything by the book and they still drop dead on us. We have much better luck with livestock haha
My co-worker says plants come to her house to commit suicide..........

for those of you who have "red thumbs" or a similar condition, there is a plant called obedient plant or physiallis (spelling). its one of those plants you can torture and it will usually still live. these things can go without water on an 80 degree day, wilt and fall completely over. if you water them they will come back in a few hours. another super durable plant is wandering jew. (I think its in the tradscantia family) its sort of a water it and forget it plant.

a lot of success with plants depends on where you get them from. those little 4 and 6 packs of veggie plants cant handle a lot of fertilizer. so many places will over fertilize them, their roots will get wound into tight balls (root bound). you plant these plants and the roots will never progress, typically they will get some type of fungus and the plant will struggle all summer. on tomato plants, so many people look for the biggest plants they can get, this is actually bad. a small tomato plant with proper care wont go though the transplant shock, and will usually produce more tomatoes. when I plant my tomatoes I pinch off all blooms and the leader. I take off the bottom set of leaves and plant it to where it looks a couple inches tall. with a little chicken manure they will go nuts.

We are hoping that in future chicken manure will solve a lot of our problems haha :)
chicken manure is high nitrogen fertilizer, it can produce methane, and it will keep you lips from getting chapped.

on another note, if you use chicken manure for fertilizer, either compost it or use it very sparingly. labeled as fertilizer it would be something like 75-5-15. all the nitrogen in it can kill plants.

poeple that make dumb comments about chickens in the house ,really don,t stop to think that same person probably won,t have thought anything of it if you had said you had a parrot in your house people pay thousands of dollars to have a parrot flying around thier house poopping as it goes, a bird that flys up and poops in places you can,t see, and tears things to pieces when ever it feels like it is alright but a chicken that follows you and stays on the ground isn,t ,hmmm

All my parrots are potty trained!

I think most of the schools in the nation have gone downhill. back when the teachers could paddle the students, the students feared getting in trouble. now it seems they see how far they can push the schools, to the point of suspension.
I never got in trouble to earn a paddling in school. but I did earn a few at home, I pretty much deserved every one. and to this day I still fear making my mom mad.

as far as the schools go, why don't they teach agriculture more? how many graphic artists do we need? we have a class locally that teaches the kids how to mix music, create videos and such. in the hills of southern ohio how much work can these kids find? I have been pushing for more agriculture/horticulture studies in the schools, but im just one person.

I just graduated from high school last fall, out of my entire school there was only about a dozen people who hunted including myself, and I was the only one doing archery. I was really disappointed to find that all of the others I ever talked to didn't have any respect for the animals it was "haha yeah I shot that @$%#@ in the head!!" And things like that, makes me really sad and disgusted. Not to mention the other 60 who give me the "OMG you shot Bambi, how sick!" as they eat a burger. I found out my city was legalizing backyard hens and the plotting began! Now alot of my friends think I'm even more odd with a yard full of chickens but that's okay, they're the ones missing out.

Haha! I'm one of the few people in my school that doesn't hunt. There's a joke at my school, "If a teacher asks you why someone is out, the reason probably has something to do with the hunting season"

Nope a GOOD influence!!! I have found the 100% easiest flower to grow is an Orchid, everyone thinks they are hard, but mine do great when I forget about them (which is often). Just give them a window with good sun light, water when I remember (about every 2 weeks) and they grow flowers for MONTHS at a time. The only time I have ever lost one, was when DH put them in the green house, in TX summer they fried in a day.
