I ran across this on a news site... Anyone else catch what I did? LOL

Clothing a Battered Chicken

Amy Leader with Sunny, a rescued chicken, in his newly-knitted sweater. Kind-hearted animal lovers have come to the rescue of a group of featherless chickens by knitting them their very own woolly sweaters. Sunny and his not-so-feathered friends were rehomed after being rescued from a poultry farm. Many of them are missing their plumage because the conditions they used to live in.

Ok. I've got one! The custodian was just in my office and told me her brother has a hen that crows; "that's bad luck", she observed. According to her there's a mountain saying that goes, "A crowing hen and a whistling woman come to no good". Ok. I can see where that philosophy came from. A crowing hen and a whistling woman are doing what a man generally does, so she's sure to be trouble, as in, she can't be controlled.

I whistle. And, I can't be controlled, either. So, it must be true. :p

Plus, her brother has a rooster that gets in with the hens but he swears the rooster doesn't fertilize the eggs. "Why is that?", I asked. "He's just plain silly", she responded. "The rooster or your brother?", I countered. "Both", said she.

I've heard a similar saying, a clucking cock and a whistling hen are neither good for any or men, or something like that. Meaning, fulfil your gender roles, you peasants!

I heard it again this morning from a woman I bought some "hatching eggs" from..
I asked about how many roos she had in with her girls (day 10 and NONE of the eggs are showing ANY signs of life at all)..

She replied "oh we don't want roosters.. they lay rooster eggs. We only keep hens so all the eggs will be girls..........."

sad thing is.. this isn't the first time I've been told this.....
