Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

In work lunch room today:

Me: What are you eating?
Friend 1: Deer Chili
Friend 2: O'h I can't eat Bambie (as she chows down on a meat lovers pizza)
Me: You know cows and chickens were babies once
Friend 2: I don't want to think about it......

This is a lady that is 50 years old.

Friend 1 actually manages a deer population and they only shot the ones that are not part of the program. As for Friend 2, still love her, she is a really nice person, but dang I had to bite back my response. At least she was honest in her statement, she does not want to think about it.....

Sounds like my family. Every time I even bring up at passing the treatment of the animals used for food nowadays, I immediately get yelled at for bring up "death." Drives me nuts! I'm not! I'm just being truthful.

Must be a special gift to be able to just close your eyes and pretend the world, inconvenient truths, and other mental discomforts simply don't exist. <sigh>

Just remind them next time that the chickens they get from the grocery store are still "babies".. most broilers are only 8 weeks old at slaughter

My "babies" were still in the brooder at that age.

Its sad really. Those broiler are so sweet. I love mine.. though he was the ugliest thing I ever saw. He was an extra chick that got mixed with my order when I started out. Poor guy. And you know what I think the meat on my orps tastes much better.

I agree.. not much beats the flavor of a DP bird that is allowed to grow out and has been free ranged with lots of good food and sunshine..

I think this ones name was sugar, I don't think we ate her but we did raise some to eat before. these birds are not really chickens they are not smart enough. they are smellier too.

You can buy cruelty free animals or from people who privately raise them, then you know the treatment of the animal.. That's what I do. We know the farmers and they are privately butchered, no cruelty or torture, and raised in a more natural and caring setting. I hope to one day get more acreage and raise all my own meat and crops. You love and care for the animals and in turn they sustain you with food. And is tastes much better, is more filling so you eat less of it, and far better nutrition. One roasted chicken from my organic flock lasts a few days with my family of five.. were as one from the market is bigger yet not enough. Plus when you have to kill and prep it yourself, you have better regards to waste and respect of labor, and life.. I thank them for their little lives.
