Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I have laughed so hard at some of these - I started reading from the beginning. I even committed a couple of "eye-rolls". But then I got to thinking - who am I trying to kid? I didn't know I didn't need a rooster either when I first decided to do this. My first thought on learning that was, "Gee, that's great - at least without a rooster I know I won't be eating fertilized eggs." <insert eye roll here - you're allowed>

I'm really new to all of this chicken stuff. I hunt and fill my freezer. No problem. I garden and can or freeze what I grow. Yep, got that covered. But I have to tell you honestly that in all of my 62 years on this planet I have never eaten an egg that came from anyplace but the corner market. Ma worked at Blue Ribbon Hatchery in Luverne, Minnesota for years as a candler. SHE refused to use farm fresh eggs for any reason. She would shudder and say, "If you only saw some of the stuff I see....." but she never finished the sentence. And I am the most squeamish kid out of the 5 she raised, so I let my imagination fill in the blanks. Not one of the five of us ever uses any egg without cracking it into a bowl first and looking at it. I know, I know. <sigh>

So here and now, in front of everyone, I confess that although I got the chickens for the eggs and later the meat, I am almost dreading the first time I crack open an egg out of my own coop. I keep reading that they taste different. Oh, oh...are they gonna be so strong I can't get used to them? I also read that the yolk color is richer in farm eggs....scary different or just different different?

I don't wanna be one of those people you all laugh at. Somebody help me....... I bow to your wisdom!

Not scary different. Try this: the first time you eat your eggs, make an omelette. Then you'll have other flavors in too. You'll just notice that it's the best tasting omelette ever. Nothing strong or weird.

The first time I made brownies with my eggs I couldn't believe it. They had such a deep, rich flavor. Everything tastes the same...just better.

We would never laugh at someone that wants to learn.

Blooie, I'm not going to lie, your post made me laugh, but I'm laughing with you. We crack our eggs into a separate bowl too--that's just smart.

I never ate many eggs as just eggs before we had chickens--they turned my stomach and made me feel sick. I was very surprised to start eating our own eggs and realize they don't bother me. The flavor is different, but in a good way. Even the whites taste better. They're also much more nutritious.

The yolk will be darker--almost orange if the hen is eating really well--and the whites will have more volume.

I was at the farm supply store the other day and they had Australorps marked as barred rocks, so I told them they were mislabeled and they said they'd fix it.  Sure enough, the next time I came in, they had barred rocks marked as Australorps.
:barnie

The worst part was when I pointed it out to the employee she insisted they were actually Australorps, and that they had come in labeled that and that no matter how much they looked like barred rocks they were not barred rocks at all. My husband told me later that he thought I was about to have it out with her.

Then she attacked me with hand sanitizer even though I told her I was allergic to the perfume in it.:he
Yes, I know you should wash your hands after handling chicks, but I will use soap and water, thanks, and I'll do it when I'm actually done handling the chicks!

But I got out of there with a new EE roo, three black sexlinks and a new banty cochin, so it was still worth the trip.

You should go to MY TSC! Last week they had green laced wyandottes! I tried my best to straighten that out......

Oh, thank you! The omelette sounds so do-able! I'll add onions, and ham, and bacon, and sausage, and cheese, and potatoes, and garlic, and cinnamon, and brown sugar and chocolate, and then the next time I make one I'll leave out the cinnamon, then the brown sugar, then the chocolate and before you know it I'll be eating farm fresh eggs all by themselves!. Teehee Seriously, that does make a lot of sense for someone who's just a little apprehensive.

You can laugh with me or at me - either way as long as you aren't calling me a "dumb cluck" I'm happy! Thank you too!

I reserve "dumb cluck" comments for people who are deliberately stupid, of which there are unfortunately many. Luckily, you don't fall into that category ;)

My favorite recipe for eggs is frittata. I mix the eggs in a bowl with some cheese and whatever I have on hand, like mushrooms and ham or tomato and basil. I pour it into a small pan and cook it slowly over a low heat until it sets, then flip it over to lightly brown the other side. Mm, mm, good.

Then there's eggy in a basket... cut a hole in a piece of bread, then put it in a pan with melted butter and pour the egg right into the hole in the bread. Cook it on both sides, and serve. The egg cooks up right in the bread. Nice and neat!

My 6yo's favorite is the egg in the bread!! Or a pancake :)

Green Wyandottes!?? Do I even WANT to know? Lol!!

You can't get close to the chicks at TSC here :(. It's good for them not being handled and switched (though it would be pretty obvious...they only have a couple of bins at a time) etc but how are you supposed to check them out?

With the weird other food stuff- sometimes I'm on the register or drive thru and get asked for diet water. And diet tea. Or if I saw "Sweet or non-sweet?" They get irritable and say "UNSWEETENED!!" Loudly. And repeatedly. Because unseeetened makes WAY more sense than non-sweetened!
People are weird!!!!

One of our favorite camping dishes is omelettes in a bag. At the last minute before we leave for the mountains, into one ziploc bag per person we pour some whipped up eggs and push out as much air as possible before sealing. Then the sealed bags get put onto ice in the cooler. The first morning of camping we get a big pot of water simmering, each person gets out an omelette bag and adds whatever they want - cheese, meats, peppers, onions, all pre-chopped, bagged and cooled - you get the idea. Shmush (technical term) the baggies around a little bit to mix everything in, pop them into the simmering water, and let them cook until they are well set. Open the bag and enjoy. We never hold the mixed baggies full of eggs for more than that first day. One overnight in the cooler is okay but once the eggs have been opened and put into the baggie their "shelf life" is limited. I know, we could do the same thing by making up the omelets when we get up in the morning, but it's a family tradition and the first morning of the campout is always pretty hectic the way it is. And oh, oh - I went off topic....
