Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

LMAO does not surprise me how out of touch most people are. I love when I get the be normal and go to the grocery store. I showed one person when we had chickens years ago the difference in the eggs. He was shocked and tells me all the time he misses the fresh eggs. He also can now taste the difference in the eggs. I have had others tell me that buying from the grocery store is so much easier and convenient. I did point out it wasn't so convenient when she went to the store and found they were out of just about everything when the snowstorm was headed her way.......

Don't get me wrong I have nothing against Vegans or Vegetarians for that matter. I have known several Vegans and found them to be pretty open minded. The militant ones were told to take a hike. I had one friend who watched my children and was vegan. She would cook them food with meat in it. She made no judgment on what I ate or fed my kids, but she also was the one to let them try her meal when she babysat. She also understood my soy allergy made a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle impossible.

I am a vegetarian with a soy allergy and I do just fine.

Oh, I would pay to see that exchange!!!

That's personal.
I took a chicken on a leash to my sister's yard sale - mostly to see if anyone would stop to pet the chicken. Some do-gooder started asking me questions "you don't just keep it in that cage do you?" pointing at the travel cage. What I really wanted to say is, "why yes! And I never clean the cage and she has mites and lice, here hold her for a minute."
Oh, I would pay to see that exchange!!

this is true, many chickens will "hold it" in the house and wait to go outside to "go". Some have never been trained to do so. Each chicken is an individual!
I have an Old English hen that trained herself not to go on people. "Duncan" loves to fly up on your shoulder or hang out in your lap, but when she needs to go, she hops down, does her business and goes right back up. The trick is to let her down when she wants and don't try to keep her...my niece learned that lesson the hard way!!

OKay, stupidest thing that I've heard about chickens..."They are loud, smelly, vicious creatures. And DUMB, too! Who in the world would want to keep them?!"

Yeah, that was me two years and 90 chickens ago!!

I've had backyard chickens on less than 1/4 acre in a development for two years. I do not have a rooster but my Spangled Hamburg loves to announce "I'm going to lay an egg" in a very loud voice then, when she is done, "I laid an egg, I LAID AN EGG .... come right now to look at my wonderful accomplishment!" in an even louder voice. She will pace the fence line announcing until I come out to collect her egg at which point she will quiet down.

Last week my across-the-street neighbor asked, "Do you have chickens?"

ME: "Yes, I've had them for two years now."

HE: "I thought I heard chickens when I was out in the yard working on the hedge this week."

ME: "Oh, I am sorry. <added explanation of Spice's routine> Does the noise bother you?"

HE: "No, I was raised in the city and I like to hear the birds singing and the woodpeckers banging on trees."

ME: "Please come over and meet the girls."

HE: "Uh, no...."

ME: "Really, come over any time and see the hens. They are very tame and they love people."

HE: "Uh, no..... I'm afraid of birds and chickens are BIG!"

ME: "The hens are in a run and can't get out. They are very pretty. I'll give you some fresh eggs."

HE: "I like eggs but I couldn't eat an egg that came out of a chicken."

ME: <trying not to burst out laughing> "I think you would like the flavor of a really fresh egg."

HE: "Uh, no.... not an egg out of a chicken."

ME: "You are welcome any time. Come on over and meet the girls."

HE: "Well, maybe if I see you out in your gardens one day."

If he ever decides to meet the hens, I will post an update, but please don't hold your breath!

I am a vegetarian with a soy allergy and I do just fine.
I can not have any legumes. My soy allergy has progressed to that point. No beans, peas, lentils.... I can't have tofu or Tempeh ( obvious reasons ), so I would be down to nuts, cheese and eggs for my protein. So even though it works for you, it would not work for me.

That would be so tough!

And I wasn't being snarky. I hear it all the time that people don't want or can't eat soy/fake meats/tofu so they can't be vegetarian. I don't eat any soy but I can eat beans, grains, and nuts so I can do it.

Quote: I realized you thought I could have the beans. I did not take you as being snarky. It does make it difficult. I eat chili without beans. I make green beans and other legumes for the kids and my husband and just about die. I miss peas so much they were may favorite veggies. I do feed them to the ducks and chickens and my family. My husband has thyroid issues and they have found soy can aggravate it. So he is now on the soy free with me to see if it helps.
