Not surprising... A lot of folks don't know NM is what's separating AZ and TX. The NEW MEXICO magazine monthly has a featurette "One of our fifty is missing" rife with vignettes of postal packages gone awry, visas denied, questions about what currency is used, etc.

This could be a bit mean towards Americans, but I've heard countless tales of American tourists getting frustrated when their dollars aren't accepted as currency in say, England.

Unfortunately, that is where the idea of the "ugly American "came from. The few people who travel and are so bigoted they think all others must conform to their ideas. However, it isn't limited to Americans, there are bigoted people the world over. Sigh.

Yeah, idiots are not an American prerogative. My better half went to some dog competition abroad, and one of the people she traveled with brought canned food with her because she couldn't stand the thought of eating the local food.

A poll done here shows that 80 percent of people consider themselves to be above average drivers. I suspect this translates to other things as well.

I don't know that calling someone a bigot just because they don't realize the world is much bigger than they've put their minds to is a very fair statement. Just earlier in this thread, 7 buddies said something about this is education. Exposing children to the fact that there is more than just "right here" and that other places are different. Some people are never really taught this.

This boy went on and on and on! It was hilarious! Also a little sad. He's 16 and has never seen a chicken! At least he was excited and interested. There is hope for the next generation!

I always thought it was really odd that the zoo had things like goats, pigs, cows, horses, chickens, and rabbits for ppl to pet.  I mean seriously, why would I go to the Omaha Zoo to see a goat?!  And then we had exchange students from Germany who'd never seen any of these things.  In fact a lot of the kids there had never seen farm animals.  They loved it.  Just like they loved Living History Farms in IA.  It was like a different planet.  After that I was glad they had the barnyard animals ppl could touch.  I loved growing up on a farm.  We didn't have chickens, dad got rid of the cows when I was around 8, but I still hate pigs and love horses lol.  Overall though I think growing up in a farm type environment is good for people.  Teaches responsibility, and gives a new perspective on where food comes from.

My fiance has a cousin (and I have no idea how she was this silly since she grew up in a small IA farming community), but she didn't know hamburgers came from cows.  Seriously.  When she found out she went vegetarian for 2 weeks.  It completely baffled me that people truly didn't know that hamburgers came from cows, pork chops and bacon come from bigs, etc.  I halfway wonder how many people out there think eggs come from a factory that makes them with a machine (not a live chicken).

When I was little and my family would go riverbanks zoo in Columbia I always thought it was weird they had squirrels, until I finally realized the squirrels were just there hanging out in between exhibits and weren't placed there on display like the other animals...lol.

I see I have some kindred spirits here besides raising chickens. I believe that those of us who camp (real camping) will be the survivors. Granted, when we lost electricity for four days a few years back we did use a generator, primarily to keep the fridges going. The internet providor didn't have backup generators so it didn't matter that our computer was up. Our home phone is over the internet so the only phone service we had was cell phones.

Back to discussing chickens, this isn't something dumb, but our insurance agent came by today to take pictures of our house. She heard our rooster crowing and commented that my wife must like raising chickens. Then she told me about a friend of hers who gives them fresh eggs and commented about how much richer they are than storebought eggs.

My ex husband is the dumbest smart guy I've ever known and I'm about to share a really good example. He got straight A's in all his college courses, but we so dumb about most things, now my example. It snowed a lot one year and knocked out the power and I was like at least we have the wokdstove and he was like how will we flush the toilets and stuff with no water? Hey genius, see all that white stuff on the ground? If you bring it in and out it near or on top of the wood stove it will under go a chemical reaction and create water...

I assume you had well water or a cistern on an electric pump? because I have city water and it still works wither my lights are on or not, and my phone still works too if I use the regular one, not the cordless version (home phone that is, my cell phone still works if it charged).

A lot of places don't have the luxury of the intelligent idea of phones without the use of power. Digital phone modems are not a good investment in the future, IMO.
