Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I do have to admit that the first time I held a freshly laid egg I was shocked at how warm it was. I guess I'd never thought about it before.

I love this thread! The only ones I have gotten are when I told someone that my Pullets were roosters, and she said, " oh that's good since you need a rooster to make the hens lay eggs right?" I then explained that I didn't. she actually laughed at her own mistake, and was not offended at all. The other was this young girl who said " NO I will not hold a chicken! They are soooo dirty and nasty" she also was grossed out by a warm egg! lol She did say she would hold a silkie though since they are cute. lol

Ummm, but your pullets aren't roosters! Pullets are females (under a year). Males under a year are cockerels.

When are chicks considered to be one or the other though? I know it's a lot of guessing.... Are they just called chicks until you figure it out?

X2, kind of freaked me out for a while, actually! And I am an "I will eat anything" kind of person. Got over it, now all my eggs sit out at room temp till I am ready to eat.

A while back, I called TSC in town to see what chicks they had in this week. Here's how the phone call went.

Me: Hi, I was wondering what breed chickens you have in this week?
Worker: I haven't checked yet, let me do that now.
...
Worker: We have Isa browns, Leghorns, Production reds and assorted bantams.
Me: Do you know if any of the bantams are feather footed?
Worker:....feather footed..?
Me: Yes.
Worker: they're only a few days old.
Me: Well, if you look closely at the legs, you can see fluff running down the leg to the toes.
Worker: Uhhhh.. Well.. I don't really know because they're only a few days old.
Me: You can see the fluff on their legs even if they are a few days old.
Worker: are you sure? I have never heard of that before
Me: it's not all that uncommon, you know what, I think I'll just come in.

Sure enough they had a bunch of feather footed bantams and I got my pair of porcelain d'uccles

I don't even know where he got that idea from lol

I had a friend who was just starting out with chickens call me to say she just got her first egg and wanted to know how to handle it...if she should dip it in bleach before eating it? Also, she wanted to know how to keep her chickens from eating any bugs so they wouldn't get inside the eggs! I assured her that she didn't have to bleach her eggs and that anything the chicken eats would be digested and not go directly into the egg. I was amazed at her questions since she taught a class at a local wildlife museum and I thought she would have more understanding about the process of certain things like this.

"I dont know where people learn this stuff!" It's really more a matter of what people *don't* learn. But, I give your mom credit for having an open minded - being willing and anxious to try the eggs, and wanting to learn about chickens. Rather than having a closed mind about the whole thing, she's open to learning. Good for her! The people that drive me nuts and that I criticize, are the ones who aren't interested in learning, who refuse to eat anything but store bought white eggs, and the ones who correct *you* because they're convinced they're right and won't listen to anyone else. Go Mom!

. Yeah she's pretty great about all of it, she is excited about the eggs. And if she doesnt know somethings or is unsure she asks me instead of telling me or arguing about it. I just don't get the people who argue amd refuse to listen, I mean it would be like me taking my car to the mechanic, then arguing his diagnosis and trying to tell him how to do his job while i know i have no idea what im talking about. I wish they would just be willing to learn, so im happy my mom os the way she is!
