Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

So it was a while ago people were posting about this - I wasn't on BYC for a while because I thought for a moment that chickens was entirely out this spring, and was very upset... didn't want BYC to remind me - but I wanted to address the whole vegan thing.

I am planning on becoming my own little version of vegan (no meat at all, no dairy at all, my chicken's eggs) and it has nothing to do with what someone said ("milking hurts the cow", and "eggs are baby chickens"). It does have to do with how healthy it is, and animal treatment. I have no problem eating eggs if the hens are treated well, just as I would gladly consume some dairy (I wouldn't make it a habit for health reasons) if the cattle were treated well. It used to be that if the cattle/hogs/chickens were treated well, I would eat meat, but I've been meat free for a year now, and I feel so much better, and more than that... something about not eating meat for a long time makes the idea repulsive to me

Have you tried looking at local farms. We purchased a share in a dairy and with your share of the cow comes milk and beef, or goat milk and goat meat - all grass fed happy animals.

That came out wrong - we purchased a share in a cow - not a dairy and not very expensive.

This was brought up a few pages ago and we were back on track...maybe you don't read all the posts.

Thanks!

Sorry, sometimes I loose track when reading all the subscriptions. I'll pay more attention.

It's fairly expensive where I am, and I'm a high schooler. My money = chickens... and my mother doesn't understand my draw towards farming or anything like that. I swear they swapped me at the hospital or something. She would just buy me store dairy and wonder why I would say "no" to eating it.

Since my pullets have started laying I told my mom she could have free farm fresh, free-range eggs.

She said "Ewwwww, that's so gross, you guys have a rooster, there will be baby chicks in the eggs!".

I said, "No, we gather the eggs very soon after they are laid and the pullets don't even want to sit on them anyway".

She says, "That's still gross, there are baby chicks in there, and I only eat sterilized eggs anyway".

You just have to name them correctly. For instance, my two pigs were named Bacon and Sausage. My turkeys were Thanksgiving and Christmas. I don't really name my chickens, other than a few of them, but I have a friend who names hers things like Original and Extra Crispy.

We were against naming our chicks since we thought it would make them seem too much like members of the family, which we don't eat. But, we started calling one hot wing since she is a bully. I keep threatening that if she does not stop picking on the other chicks she is going to end up as a small plate if hot wings.

Well, to be fair, cows don't lay eggs.

Haha! True! But they had chickens and horses and lots of other farm animals too.

She's also the person that got totally grossed out when I told her that beef came from muscle tissue of a cow! Lol! It totally grossed her out when I told her that!

I love to eat meat. Lots of it! But I remember one time I was halfway through a meal when I thought about beef coming from a cow. I couldn't finish eating. I was so grossed out. What's even funnier is that I couldn't even eat the veggies on my plate. Just too grossed out.

Luckily the feeling didn't last long. I rejoined the carivorous world the next day.

Lol!

Yeah, I don't think too much about it either. I eat beef, fish and poultry, but I don't like to think about where it comes from. I know, that makes me a hypocrite (of sorts).

I even try to sneak chicken into the house from the grocery store so that my chickens don't know that I eat chicken. There I said it. I eat chicken.
