Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I am 5 ft too and my Minions all use me as their measuring stick. They all come up and see where the top of their heads are on me....... I bet he is just too sweet and most likely will be protective of his Momma as he grows
He is a sweetie. (no I'm not biased at all) He's almost 6 and the little one is almost 3. They are country boys through and through. Trying to raise them to appreciate where things come from and learn to do things on their own if possible. We call ourselves "beginner homesteaders" because we are doing things for ourselves that save money. We'd love to have our own cow and pig and all but it just ain't happening right now. My in-laws have poultry farms(don't start hating, people! gotta pay the bills somehow!) and I get the birds left from when they catch a batch. I keep some and process some. I have offered to give some to my parents, but my mom says she doesn't like "fresh chicken". I ask her if she'd rather have moldy chicken? My grandma raised chickens too so I guess momma just didn't eat growing up lol.

I love talking to foreign people who have tried keeping chickens in the states. Well...Some of the stories are good (the ones about the roosters lol) and some are sad (laying hens only fed scraps and a small yard which wouldn't lay-wonder why-and wound up ??) People normally don't tell me the fate of their animals that they don't have anymore...unless they make up a lie..I'd rather they not say a thing at all.

I'm glad you liked that, being from the south I just responded ," Well, Bless your heart."

The first week or so of school a new student from "up North" told me that everyone was so sweet to her. Including a nursing home resident that would always say, "Bless your heart." I was trying so hard to not bust out laughing. Finally I told her that was NOT a compliment.

A friend of mine has chickens... she found out that I have parrots, ducks and geese...
her comment: "I don't think I could be in the same room with those things"
me: "who.. the parrots?"
her: "yes.. them and the ducks and geese... I'm terrified of birds.. they are just so evil"
me: "but you have chickens.. they're birds...."
her: "no they aren't! Chickens are NOT birds!"
me:.. "they're avian.. you know..birds.. they have feathers .. lay eggs... so yeah.. they're birds.. just like ducks and geese"..
her: "no they aren't! You don't know what you're talking about.. ducks and geese are birds... chickens are chickens NOT BIRDS!"

I gave up after that... I thought at first she just meant small flighted birds were her what she feared.. but she's afraid of ducks and geese too.. so.... yeah...

I have a student who is terrified of chicken feet. So I brought a Silkie to school to show her. I might just be evil. If chickens aren't birds what are they? Related to platypuses?
Lol-ing about the broody not having milk post just above. While my post is the total opposite.....I take care of a 15 month old little girl. She is totally enamored with our hens and now our 1 week old chicks. She toddles around calling "here bock bock" and points to the laundry room door and says "see bock bocks". Yesterday while she was eating her lunch (which included chicken) she picked up a piece of the chicken and said "yum bock bock". This baby knows where her food comes from!

.

My 20 month old tries to get into the laundry room constantly and says, "Awwee!" When I brought the last box of chick home I told her she couldn't see them because they needed to get hot. So she started blowing on them like she does her food and saying, "yum, yum." ha ha The only chicken nuggets she has ever had were tofu, but whatever!

Now that's raising a baby right! I have skinned a deer, catfish, chickens, and squirrels. My kids have all seen it and I tell them where their food comes from. Our neighbor has cows across the road and they know that's where their hamburgers come from. Every time my son sees me cooking any kind of meat, he asks if daddy shot it and did I skin it. lol We also garden and my little one was helping me water it last week. He would water a plant and say, "Help it grow." He then looked at me and said, "Help you grow, momma?" lol I'm only 5' tall. It's sad I've got a 2 year old making short jokes at me.

The short jokes abound around here too.

What does it have to do with foreigners? Some of us are foreigners and do just fine.

Is it like a neighbor I had in NC who told her daughter that since we were Hispanic and had a rooster we were obviously cock fighting so they stole my rooster to set it free and ended up getting arrested for left, destruction of property, and a hate crime?

What's sad is realizing that, as Chief Procurement Officer of the family, your high hiding places for contraband are no longer good. I've realized if I want to hide goodies from the boyos, it's got to be down low. They never look below their knees

I've got a few years before mine are taller than me so I have to get inventive. I usually hide it on top of something then send them Another room so I can climb. Or in the bathroom which honestly only buys me a few seconds lol

My mother-in-law used to wrap cookies, doughnuts, etc. in white butcher paper and label them dog food before putting them in the freezer. That was her way of keeping goodies from her two hungry sons who would have quickly demolished them. It was many years after we were married before I let my husband in on the secret He said he always wondered when he was growing up why there were so many packages of "dog food" in the freezer.

Ok, the people who think the eggs from the store are "clean" should see pictures of the dirty, crowded,
disgusting conditions where those poor factory farm hens live.

I tried buying free range cost too much now having my own I'm still hoping other people will stop buying caged at least factory farms seem so heartless

Have you warned her about "isn't that nice", too?

Southerners aren't really nicer - they just manage to put you down in a sweet sounding way. Must be all that "sweet tea" we drink.
