Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

That statement fits me to a T. Every year when vacation time rolls around is very stressful for me. All of my family is 600+ miles away. I have to find someone to come in and take care my horse, my farm dog and my chickens. I have had some good folks that followed my instructions. And i have had some folks that thought their way was better than mine......... And my family can not understand why i am worried about everything at home, after all they are 'just' chickens......

My next door neighbor reluctantly leaves town to see an old friend who lives 6 hours away. I asked why she doesn't invite her friend to come here, instead? She said her friend refuses to drive distances, so my neighbor has to go there. I took this as valuable advice. Now, I tell people they have to come visit me because I don't drive long distances any more. People are always saying "I don't" do such and such these days, as in "I don't do windows", "I don't cook", "I don't eat backyard eggs". So, I've joined the trend. Why don't you? Who needs the stress. Just say, "My doctor told me to avoid stress so, with all my responsibilities at home, I don't go away overnight, anymore. It's just too stressful.". Let them come to you, instead.

But Biddies, if they come to you they are harder to get rid of. I like to have an excuse to leave, as in "Whoops, look at the time. I have to get home to take care of the animals." It's important to have a good exit strategy.

Yeah, you're right about that. I can definitely limit the length of my stay that way. This will require further thought.

I don't "do" vacations. Lol!

My vacation happens daily when I go hang out with my chickens.

I rarely have people here because we live so far out in the boonies people are afraid to be stuck here with no conveniences, or maybe it's the stories I tell about our woods after dark...

I know what you mean. We are 13 miles from the nearest town of 5K people, 16 miles from the next town of 350 people and a mile or so from our nearest neighbor. The peace, the quiet, the serenity are such a treasure. So, we mention that we have bobcats and mountain lions in the area and for some reason people just don't want to come visit us...

Lol! Yes!

I also tell people they have to use the outhouse if they stay here. We had one built because when we were building our house we lived in a large army tent and had no electricity for a while. That usually discourages anyone who insists on visiting.

It's evil, I know. But SO funny to see the look on their faces.

I love it! I thought I was the only true recluse left. If I never leave here I am happy. I just got our new "indoor" toilet operating this morning.

We do have a "stool" in the middle of the unfinished basement, but most people would rather hold "it" than do their job done there! ( We are remodeling the home I grew up in 50 years ago. It was lacking in any creature comforts)

I must be weird. I love having chickens and don't mind taking care of them one bit. But I also have no problem leaving them. My 8 year old granddaughter, Katie, and 9 year old grandson, Evan, take turns taking care of them while I'm gone and they do a fantastic job. Their mothers come over with them, but the kids do all of the chores and I always find the coop locked up correctly, the poop board cleaned off, and eggs are brought in and marked with the date they were laid. I have a big feeder, so they usually only have to check that and top it off if needed. The same with the waterer. So I leave town without worry.

I like my friends, both on the forums and around town. I like going over to BJ's and cutting strips for quilts with her. I like meeting Julie for lunch in Powell. I like going to the post office every day to get my mail and visiting with other townsfolk there. I have my twice monthly town council meetings and I have only missed 2 in my entire 4 year term - once when I was living in Denver at the Ronald MacDonald House while my daughter-in-law and I awaited the birth of little Kendra, and the other time when we almost lost my sister Linda to an aneurysm. I like making runs to Billings or Cody for shopping or a nice dinner out. And I like it when friends invite us over for cards or dinner or whatever.

We are packing right now for a one week trip back to South Dakota for Thanksgiving. It'll be the first time in 18 years that I've spent a holiday with my family - but only because it's a 700 mile drive and the roads and weather can be iffy this time of year. Oh, we go back for visits a couple of times every summer but we came so close to losing my sister Linda that I feel strongly about spending at least this holiday with my family.

I enjoyed the cruise I took with my daughter last year, and we've already booked next year's cruise. I like people very much and I don't feel imposed upon or cornered if someone stops by or invites us over. Do I have to turn in my chicken lady badge?

That's awesome, I love it when a home gets remodeled!

We're building our home on acreage that's been in the family for generations, but we're doing it as we can afford it so that we don't have a mortgage. We lived in that tent for 3 years and I loved it! I still kind of miss laying in there at night listening to the wind blow through the trees. I just go lay in the hammock when I get the urge to sleep outside. Lol!

I think that there are all kinds of people who love chickens, it's awesome to be able to have someone you trust take care of you're little sweeties while you're gone!

I'd be a hermit whether I had chickens or not, but I do love them. They add a whole new dimension to my life.
