Dumped Easter Ducks

They should make easter ducks selling and coloring illegal, before they made cockfighting illegal.

There is nothing gained by this stupid custom, but supporting and sustaining human selfish indulgence and plain stupidity.

At least cockfighting served a purpose very benefitial for the breeding and development of chicken species through human history.

If there was not cockfighting there would be no multitude of chicken breeds as we know them today.

And chickens gene pool would be much narrower than we have it now, if cockfighting was never practiced.

the first chicks and duck we ever had came from an uncle who bought them for our sons for Easter. Way back then I knew nothing about taking care of them. Both chicks died I thought the kids handled them to much when in reality it was the care they got. We didnt have chick starter or heat. The duck survived til early summer. We made a cage outside for it and our dog got it. Since then I have learned alot about the care. When these are bought for Easter thats probably what happens to most of them. Then you have a person like the girl I worked with. Her aunt got all the neices and nephews chicks for Easter. After they started to get big they didnt know what to do with them she didnt know I was raising chickens cause she had been off work medical for a few weeks. When she got back she was telling me about the chicks and how they had dumped them by their church. It was 2 days before so I drove out and looked for them. They were gone probably eaten. Made me very sad and a little mad. I know she didnt know but really why dump an animal if nothing else take them to a shelter

A lot of people have the mistaken idea that ducks are "wild" and should be out at a pond with other ducks as soon as they grow up. Even people who have raised ducks either for 4H or for personal pets and were very familiar with them still think it's OK to dump them at the local lake. I've heard so many stories about ducks being dropped off and the poor little duck stays near where he last saw his human flock and cries for hours if not days (possibly attracting predators). These are people who should actually know better, but they still believe that ducks do OK in the wild.

At our lake a lot of people who don't know anything about ducks seem to think that the ducks live a good life there because people feed them lots of food. But, they don't see the torn-up ducks, broken leg ducks, fishing line injured ducks, and sick ducks that I see that I can't get help for because they've become too feral to handle.

OMG that is all I have been hearing from my extended family lately, "Why don't you release them out into the wild near a lake so they can be happy and live with other ducks! What are you going to do with all those ducks?" Um, DUH!! EGGS that you have already tasted in my baked goods and they are part of the family we love them and we are all they know! They are not recycled pets like some people think.

Easter or any other domestic duck no longer cute and fuzzy dumped at a public lake is a pet peeve of mine as well. I swear you can go to just about any public lake and find domestic breeds of ducks that have no business being there. And as usual, tons of people throwing them bread........

Thanks for posting on this topic, I didn't even realize it was a problem... I did know that domestic ducks shouldn't be released but I have never heard of people buying ducks and then dumping them. I think this is definitely a part of the bigger problem that people sometimes buy pets (dogs, cats, pigs etc...) without committing to their life long care even when things get tough.

I'm proud to live in a state (Virginia) that made coloring chicks and ducks illegal decades ago. In addition, single chick/duckling sales are also illegal. You must purchase a minimum of 6 birds, at least at retail stores.

I live near a huge recreational lake, Smith Mountain. It's illegal to feed or to dump ducks there.
