Duramycin??

I am so so confused here, I thought tylan was mostly a antibiotic for respatory stuff, if it is a gut or intestine thing will tylan help?

Ok.. finally found this thread in the archives . I'm slightly unsure if I've been dosing properly. I have the powder oxytetracycline and after some thinking I figured to get a 600 to 800mg solution I am mixing 1/4 teaspoon (or about 1 gram) per gallon of water. I hope that's enough as some are saying a tbls. per gallon ? Any current info on this ?

The whole 6.4 ounce bag of Duramycin-10 makes 25 gallons at the 400mg dosage. Dividing 6.4 by 25 makes 0.256 ounces per gallon. Convert 0.256 ounces to teaspoons and you get 1.536 (1 1/2) teaspoons per gallon of water, 3/4 of a teaspoon for half a gallon (8 cups). Since most sites I have seen say the dosage is between 200 - 400mg, I am going with 3/4 of a teaspoon for nine cups of water so that I can divide the dosage evenly by three and use 1/4 of a teaspoon for 3 cups of water, since I only have one sick chicken. If I can find a 1/8 teaspoon measuring spoon, I'll break it down even further to 1/8 of a teaspoon for 1 1/2 cups of water to not have to throw away so much of the leftover treated water if she doesn't drink it.

I just called Durvet about the dosing or Duramycin. I was told 1 level Tablespoon per 1 gallon of water.
Break down would be...
1 1/2 tsp per 2 quarts water
3/4 tsp per quart water
1/4 tsp per 10.67 fl oz or 1 cup + 1/4 cup + 2 TB water
1/8 tsp per 5.33 fl oz or 1/2 cup + 3 TB water
Give for 10 days replace water every 24 hours. add powdered jello to the water to mask the antibiotic taste and make more enticing to drink.

My Rooster is not drinking much so I will be dropping in in his mouth. He said I should see improvements fairly quickly.

Actually, their math is flawed. The correct 800mg dose is 1.5 tablespoons per gallon. I'll explain more later.

Some Duramycin facts:
  • One bag is 181 grams powder
  • One bag has 10 grams tetracycline
  • 10 grams tetracycline = 10,000 mg tetracyline
  • 10,000 mg ÷ 800 mg = 12.5 gallons medicated at 800 mg.
  • I weighed one tablespoon and it weighs ~10 grams.
  • Several people have counted the number of tablespoons per bag as ~18, so it's 18 ÷ 12.5 = 1.44 tablespoons.

More math:
Package weighs 181 grams and has 10 grams tetracycline.
10 ÷ 181 = 0.055, which means it's 5.5% tetracycline, 94.5% filler
One gram = 55mg
One tablespoon weighs about 10 grams which = 550 mg
800 ÷ 550 = 1.45 tablespoons
The 800 mg dose for one gallon = 1.5 tablespoons (825mg is close enough)
