Dust bath space: enclosed?

I saw this design in the book Fresh Eggs Daily and wanted to give it a try. The sides are high enough to hold most of the contents in during use, and as a bottomless container, it will drain when it rains. My pullets will move to the new set up in a week or two. Fingers crossed that they like it. I will put DE, wood ash, sand, and some soil to get it started.

My run is paving stones, pea gravel and sand. They have a cat litter tray filled with soft, fine sand and they love it! I never see them dust bathing anywhere else.

I use a large cat litter box without the top and use sand, dirt, wood ash, and DE they love it and more then one can get in at a time. I put mine under the hen house, in the summer it stays cool for them.

Edit to add: and crushed granite

Do you happen to have a photo of it (in use?) :)
