dust bath

how deep should my dust bath be? I have four barred rock chickens. Also what should I use to make the dust bath?

I've seen birds make dust baths out of pretty this soil so I don't know if the depth is extremely important. Obviously the deeper, the better.
Other than the ones chickens make on their own, if I create one, I use relatively equal parts of soil, sand, wood ashes and agricultural lime.

If I made a dust bath, my birds just make their own, I'd make it at least 10" deep and about 16" in diameter(or 16x16").
