dust bath

As in container or "bathing" substance? At their age, it isn't really something they *need*, and may even be something to don't use just yet - but if you want to provide one there is no harm in doing so.

I use diatomaceous earth for my girls' dust bath. Ive read it keeps the mites down and I'm guessing it works. 2 years into my chicken raising and haven't seen the first mite. Though my girls are mature layers. At 3 weeks I wouldn't use the DE just yet though.

They are 3 weeks old and one of the girls started to lay on her side and kick up the pine shavings on her back. I know that they are young but can I put something in the brooder for them?

Just the DE, or DE with sand or dirt?

I just use the DE. I only put a quart or 2 in their dust box at a time but I've had good luck so far. I use the Red Lake brand but I don't think brand makes a difference.
