Anyone else have chickens dust bathing in the deep bedding inside coop rather than the dust bath tub?
They are 10 week old satins and even in the run I found them today dust bathing in the deep litter. They won't use the dust bathing area.
Any thoughts? Anyone else experienced similar problems?

What are you using for bedding, both inside the coop and in the run? And what are you using as the dust bath material? Chickens have preferences, maybe they don't like what you have in the dust bath. A lot of people go for sand as a default option, for some reason, but chickens don't actually like sand. It's too coarse. They much prefer finer substances, or a mix of textures. I use peat moss in my dust bath and the chickens go crazy for it!

I use chunky dirt without fertilizers mixed with a little sand. My 10 month olds use the dust bath in the run just fine. It is the 10 week olds that are using the bedding and litter.
In my bedding I use pine shavings.
In my run I use pine shavings, sand, leaves, straw, etc.

Yes! I sprinkle permethrin dust in between layers of bedding in my coop (we have a history of mites) and my satins love to dust bathe there🤷‍♀️
If mites aren't currently active, best not to spread permethrin all over, can cause resistance.
