A tip on pine pellets: By woodstove pellets instead. Same exact thing, but the cost is ~$5 for a 40-lb bag at Tractor Supply or Ace. (I discovered this when looking into alternatives for Feline Pine cat litter. Same thing, marketed differently = fraction of the cost.)

Thanks John. Despite your lack of a degree, your apparent knowledge of chickenology is impressive. Seriously, that was very helpful. The chicks are just starting to develop feathers, so I guess its off to the garage for them. Cheers, and good luck with yours.
