I read before I got my delawares that they tend to be early-maturing. Wonderful! So I have been waiting patiently since Feb. for them to be old enough to lay. They looked like this by the time they were 19wks:

Looked to me like they should be laying within a week or two. No little brown pullet eggs yet but I have gotten several beautiful bluish-green eggs from this girl who is the same age as the dellies:

I went out the run today with the intent of snapping some pictures to put up here and complain about my lack of eggs from birds who look like they should be laying. Like this one:

Or these two:

As I continued to despair, I realized I was missing a dellie. I opened up the door that leads to the nest box to see this:

No egg from her yet, but that did give me hope that it will be soon. With my other birds, they were laying well before they had comb and wattles that big and bright. These dellies are just making me wait to spite me I am sure. Here's hoping for a little brown pullet egg before the day is through!

These ladies are just over 22wks and they had better get on the ball quick. I sold three of my layers about a month ago to make more room in the run. I have had to BUY eggs twice now since these girls are taking their time getting started.

My first batch that I kept began laying at 22 weeks, but I did have a 24 week old who was just coming into lay, though she had not laid her first egg yet--unfortunately, she died of a heart defect of some sort. I was very surprised when these began laying so early.

I have a 22 Delaware week old that is yet to lay, so don't hold your breath waiting or you might turn blue.

Well I found this little egg next to the nest box this morning:

At this point I am assuming it is from one of the dellies. Hurray! I hope the other two start soon as well and that I don't ever have to buy eggs again!
