Songster
Oo good things to knowWhen I can't afford the steel cut oats, the quaker oats are ok, but I do prefer to give my chickens the best whenever possible. They love the oats uncooked, just tossed in the run for them to scratch at. You can also give them whole wheat grain if you can find it.
My chickens really, really love eating sunflower seeds right off the flower head. If you can get a bag of sunflower seeds that are marketed for wild birds they'll have loads of fun scratching for that too. Also, the sunflower seeds are good for egg production. From time to time I'll toss in a hand full of Goat feed - the kind with different grains in it.
My kids found soldier fly larvae in the rabbit droppings and spilt rabbit food under the hutch and they gathered a bunch in a coffee can. You can imaging what the chickens did when those got tossed about the run for them. If you are interested in growing them, they thrive in the spilt rabbit food and shade. Oh, and frogs. My girls will chase each other around when one finds a little frog.
