Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Just be cautious at swaps. There are some horror stories about people taking sick birds and infecting everyone there as well as sending home illness to birds on people's shoes.

Just sayin'
I always look for sickness. Ya gotta look for the signs - color of the comb, sneezing, looks skinny, lively and anything else that doesn't look normal. I bought three from a swap last year and no problems.

this is not really very reliable. Many chicken pathogens can remain dormant in a "carrier chicken" and either the stress of the move can inflame it and cause that bird to get sick, or even if it doesn't get sick itself, it sheds the pathogen in its poop. That's why you should always quarantine...preferably for a whole month, longer if you can. The incubation period for a lot of germs is longer than two weeks and many people mistakingly integrate birds at two weeks then everyone gets sick.
I prefer to hatch mine, although that's not always a guarantee either, some things are passed from mother to check inside the egg.

I have a friend that purchased eight week old started pullets about two months ago. They seemed healthy, but the flock was clearly not a closed flock. Today she called me with symptoms one of her newer birds has, we are pretty sure it is coryza. I don't want to go over and see b/c of my flock, but the smell x sneezing/gurgling and a "foamy" nose sounds pretty sure. After talking to her, it sounds like this bird has had symptoms for a couple of weeks, but has recently gotten worse. Now she has to decided if she wants to cull her whole flock and start over, or treat indefinitely and never bring in new birds. I have added two grown out pullets to my flock before, but from a super reliable source that used oxine on our shoes before we were even allowed on the property.
