Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Quote:
Give her a little time. My head hen caught her leg on the cord on a bale of straw and her leg was dangling. I thought of culling her, but she was my favorite hen. I was on my way out of town for a week, so I put her in our portable coop, and my DH (who is a saint) hand fed her the week I was gone. She gradually put weight on the leg and completely recovered to regain her spot as top hen within a few months. Give her a chance to heal.

Quote: x2 @ibarbidahl, I forgot to say also, I babied Cinnamon when it happened, I would give her extra treats of mealworms and scrambled eggs since she was too slow to get any at treat time so she kept her strength up. She insisted on roosting so I would get out early enough to lift her off the roost and any time she got up on one of the perches I would take her down so that she wasnt jumping down any more than neccessary. It took her forever before she would scratch with it but she is doing great now so hang in there.

Here is a front picture of the comb. Turns 8 weeks on Thursday so I'll try again then.

The comb has 3 distinct rows which indicates boy, all of my 17+ week girls are with pea combs are now starting to pink up and each still has a single row of bumps but my cockerel had the 3 rows by 6 weeks.

New March- If you have a roo (And especially if you have a lavender/grey/blue/splash roo) I will pay big bucks for a few eggs from Wester. :-( Bunny got caught in the top of the coop on the chicken wire and broke...something. I'm not sure if it is hip or femur but her leg is dangling and she can't bear weight on it. I am praying for a miraculous recovery - but being somewhat realistic.
After spending so much time with her 'm really taking this pretty hard. I did the same thing with my first light brahma Dusty- I only let myself get attached to 1 bird each time I raise them (every third year) and wouldn't you know that would be the bird that comes to an early demise? I'm heartsick.

Sorry to hear that! I had an Easter Egger rooster last year that I accidentally ran over with a chicken tractor and broke his leg right above his ''knee''. I separated him and he healed up fine though after a couple of weeks. I hope your bird does the same.

Thanks everyone. After 2 days and 2 nights of immobilization she seems to be doing quite a bit better. She is no longer letting the leg hang behind her and is using the muscle to keep it in front of her instead. She still can't walk at all but it is a big improvement and makes me hopeful. Love the stupid bird so it makes me happy.

Yay for improvement! It took quite awhile for Cinnamon to put hers down, she held it up and hopped for quite a few days.
