Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Reckless, how old is Lotus? She does look very similar to Jade. I am also pretty certain Taffy is a pullet. But I will be very frustrated if Betty is a boy. I specifically went back and bought that chick because I knew I already had 2 roos. Ugh. But yes, that dark red/brown is causing my worry. However, I have read that that can also depend on how it is patterned. Betty's comb hasn't really raised up any, it's just wide. All 5 of the EE's in my current batch have had different shaped combs, so there's not much to compare with.

To be honest, I have no idea how old Lotus is. We've had her for... 8-9 weeks now? And when we got her, she looked like this:

Bottom left. And this next two pictures were two and three days later.

So I guess, my guess for her age would be about 9-10 weeks?? We got her on April 4th. In those pics I'm assuming she was about 1 week maybe? She's my only Easter Egger so I don't have much to compare!

But hmm, maybe Betty is a pullet then.. like I said, I'm a novice! Looking at her more, she reminds me a lot of my Golden Comet, Teasel. Bigger comb, upright tail, stands more like a boy.. but Teasel is a girl for sure. But her stance does have a cockerel aura about it in my opinion.. eep!

Have you found any pointed feathers in her neck area or her tail area? Her coloring over her body reminds me of Lotus as well- with the orange in the feathers- and that's partridge patterning right? I heard more patchy coloring is more male, and more patterned is female, as well as partridge patterns. How red is her comb in person, in comparison to the other girls?

I agree that Lotus looked to be about a week old. :)

With mine, Jade seems to have a redder tint to her comb than Betty. Taffy does too, so maybe it is just the hot weather. Even the combs on the boys change shades. Betty does have a partridge pattern, but so did one of the roos before he got the red patches. We will see I guess. :)

Please help...my EE is 9 weeks old. Can anyone please tell me if this is a roo or a hen? It made some pretty loud noises this morning (several times) and for days, the comb just looks a bit more reddish to me (but they were moved downstairs, and the lighting is totally different so didn't know if that was why it seemed more red.) Anyone???

Yay! I get so happy when I start being able to do that kind of stuff- sexing, telling what age they are, breed, etc. I'm like that with rabbits, but now chickens have jumped into the mix haha. And I have to admit, I'm pretty good at sexing Barred Rocks c; lol!

Hmm, yeah, I definitely understand the comb changing colors! My cornish rocks' combs used to be bright red and then just pink and they were always changing whether they were too hot or not! And I dunno what their sexes were though, they looked similar but Iris's comb was smaller than Ivy's and the tails were a bit different- so I think one was a boy and the other a girl. Possibly. But anyway!

Guess Jade will be a surprise? |D I think if I saw her in person, I could probably figure it out- I generally have a pretty good sense on whether they're boys or girls by watching them behave and walk and such. That's how it was with both Roan (Rhode Island Red) and Dahlia (Barred Rock). Everyone insisted they were girls but I was like- nope, boy. And they both were :X

This was my mystery chick from the hatchery. It's 7.5 weeks old now. I've been told by other that the coloring isn't seen in a cockerel. However, the tail feathers come to point. There is no waddles yet, and this one is the same size as my Red Star Pullets of the same age.

I've posted about this bird on "My Mystery Chick" thread but thought I might get the attention of more people with EE knowledge if I reported in this thread.

Any guesses, Pullet or cockerel???

That coloring is almost always seen in cockerels, and the comb is too large and red to be a pullet...

I agree with the poster above, Big G started getting red in the comb like that while my girls were not, I'd guess roo as well.
