Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

I think it's a pullet, but I'm not very confident (because of the darkish wings). Hope you get some other opinions. Do you have a close up of the comb?
Your girl looks very much like our Chubs, and I am pretty sure she is a pullet, our cockerel is is right behind her and she looks nothing like him, body shape wise. He had a very red comb by 6wks. So I am going to say Pullet, but I am no expert.

We have five nest boxes, and two of them have curtains! All of our hens have very clear preferences for curtain or not. The curtains are actually white wash clothes stapled to the top edge, It gives them about an inch on all sides for entry and air circulation. The man that built our coop had problems with anxious layers, and broken/eaten eggs. This solved the problem for him. We curtained the two boxes at the very beginning. Some like a little privacy.

I bought the first batch through Murdoch's (Feed store), which I think gets their chicks from McMurray. My second batch was a part of my Cackle Hatchery Surprise order. And if they had had EE Roos at Murdochs, I would have bought some from the get go. So my little grey ball of fluff grew up to be a little Roo (who I think crowed for the first time this morning, while my nearly same age RSL has been crowing and mounting for 2-3 weeks).

Just reposting the Roo I do have. I wouldn't mind one of my baby EE turning out to be another Roo though. Unless his color changes a bit, he is just not my favorite in Roo colors ( I used to have Game Cock/EE Roos with the fabulous tails and such, so I am partial to those red/black-green colors in Roos). That first chick is pretty intense in its dark, rich coloring, so I am really interested to see how it turns out.

i just have to post... your roo looks SO similar to one of mine =)

Wow, they do look a lot alike. Even in such a multi-colored/patterned "breed", there are still strong similarities.

I am sitting here just waiting for my EE to start laying. I want to see what colors come out. They are around 17 weeks old, and my 18 week old RSLs and BO are just starting.

Thanks for the imput. I am really hopeful for a pullet, but the waiting is killing me

Hi,

I wondering if my EE is a pullet or a roo? "Belle" is a 9 week old EE purchased from a hatchery. "She" is I think 2nd in to the top dog (so far) in a group of 4, but otherwise is not crowing, dosen't act protective of the group or any of the other rooster type behaviors. What do you think?
Sorry, this goes with the above reply with the new comb pictures. Thanks for any and all imput

Hi Motts, your chick looks a lot like my Archie at that age, except mine had a clearer 3 pea rows. Your chick's comb looks red, not pale yellow, plus the feather pattern is not that of a typical hen. So my GUESS is your chick is a rooster. You should check for emerging saddle feathers to be sure. Go back a few pages, there are a couple of posts regarding saddle feathers with instruction on how and where to find them. BTW, my 2nd rooster's comb didn't start to get big or very red until AFTER I gave away the top rooster, then the 2nd one took over the top spot and started to get aggressive, and in a few days the comb grew double in size. This is my first time raising EE chicks so I don't know if my experience is typical. Please post again once you know for sure of the sex.

Thank you, this was very helpful. I think I have a little roo. Beyonce looks totally different than Rhianna. Her feathers are white w/gray and not as smooth nor lay down like Rhianna's, also B's feathers are not as developed as R's. Both are nearly 4 weeks old, and when I let them out to free range during the day. Beyonce runs of the larger pullets away and is protective of Rhianna.
