Easter Egger Thread!

Pearl seems really sweet, and he seems like a good boy! The fact that he trusts that you'll keep him safe is really cute! But Cocoa is being a jerk, and if he were mine, I'd probably do what you're planning to do. Just make sure Pearl isn't being picked on too much, roosters can be very aggressive to other roos. I have 5 meat-birds, 2 of the RIRs are roosters. The dominant one is very mean to me and to the other roo. He bites, chases and attacks the roo, and me too! When I pull out food most of my hens come running to eat out of my hands, and even the sweet less dominant roo comes to me and eats! Unfortunately, even if he's trying to be gentle, he ends up biting really hard, so I pull back and most of the time I don't let him eat out of my hands because he doesn't know how to be gentle.. But sometimes I make sure he gets more treats, because he's a good boy. But, I used to think he was the mean roo... So I did yell at him sometimes, and even though he'll eat out of my hands, he won't be touched, picked up, or followed.. He'll run. But it's okay, I mean, I kind of get it. He is being traumatized by the mean roo. (Which by the way, I'm hopefully getting rid of soon.) But my problem is.. I love some of the meat-birds because they're really sweet.. But I promised that I wouldn't keep them.. I've been trying not to get attached, but it's so hard.. :barnie :hit :(

They are all currently in the coop and run together -- so far so good. I'm not holding out too much hope that the calm will last. Pearl really has been good and today has been wanting protection. He's a bit of a sissy/mama's boy lol.

I would like to have meat chickens as well, but not sure if I'm up to the task of butchering. I can clean fish no problem and assisted in dressing a deer that was hit by a car in front of my house. I think once I do the first it should be easier.

Good and bad news today.

First the good: I got my first egg! It's a bit on the small size and has a hole in the pointy end, but it's a real honest to goodness egg!!

Now for the bad news: Cocoa is still being ornery and wanting to attack me. He's back in the cage after having everyone out all day.

I read the butchering/stock recipe thread last night in "meat chickens" and think I can possibly do it ok. Not sure when though as I'm busy trying to build poop boards and different roosts.

Yay, first egg! :highfive: Still waiting for mine to start laying! :old

Good luck with Cocoa.. I can't bear to watch chickens be butchered.. Its just me loving them too much I guess.. But what has to be done must be done. If Cocoa isn't being the best rooster, then he has to be gotten rid of.. Just keep in mind its best for you and your flock, and that should help. :hugs Best of luck. :)

I decided I'm going for full isolation for 48 hours in the hopes that her being lonely and away from that habit will break it. I really don't want to have to cull her, she's a beauty and one of my egg layers! Plus, my favorite pullet just suffered an attack and I'm not sure she's going to be OK… So I really don't want to lose another chick! I already had two of my egg layers pass. Another one has Fowlpox and hasn't put on any weight in days. I'm worried about losing that one too! I got eight chicks from my local feed store and they aren't doing very well on the whole. I'm pretty certain it's not me, because I have 13 meat chickens from another hatchery that were shipped nonetheless and they all survived and are thriving.

Thanks :) I cracked the egg and it looked perfect and very orange, just a bit small. The membrane had not been broken, so I ate it on my BLT for dinner.

Yes it will be hard, but I need to just get over it. I do look at them all as pets, but have also thought it would be nice to have fresh chicken meat as well, but was thinking more along the lines of their future offspring.

Wish I knew what could be done for feather plucking. I wonder if you give her a spritz of that bitter apple stuff they use to keep dogs from chewing stuff up........

I hope you have the sick chicken separated far from the others so they don't all get it. I don't know much about fowlpox, recovery, and if the eggs can still be eaten.... keep us updated.
