Easter Egger's and Ameraucana's = same thing

I wonder if a lot of those hatchery americana are actually ameraucana with sloppy breeding, like some slw's having a recessive straight comb instead of rose comb.

Given the quality of other hatchery birds, I have often wondered why the Ameraucanas get singled out this way.

You can buy "White Leghorns" that may have some black feathers, "Naked Necks" that come in a mixture of colors, "Cream Legbars" that are not really autosexing, "Wyandottes" or "Hamburgs" that may show up with a single comb when it should be rose, and so forth.

But I don't see nearly so much fuss about "Naked Necks" needing a different name just because the colors are wrong!

Personally, I think "Easter Egger" works nicely to distinguish them from "Brown Eggers" and "White Eggers."

But that would leave us with no term for "has muff/beard and pea comb and lays blue/green eggs" (which is what hatcheries seem to mean by "Ameraucana.") And we do need a way to distinguish those from Cream Legbars, and Olive Eggers (often Legbar x Maran), and Whiting True Green, and various other chickens that do lay colored eggs but that are not even trying to look like an Ameraucana.

I think it's because people can buy the naked necks for 4 bucks a pip and don't have to worry about getting screwed. But when you pay 40 bucks for a bird and get a 4 buck bird in quality, that's where I see a lot of disappointment and confusion

That's true, but cackle sells real ameraucana pullets for $20. Less than half that straight run. Same price as my bielefelder pullets, but I got straight run for $6.50. They're both pretty popular and becoming a lot more common. Pretty soon the only difference on ameraucana will probably be hatchery vs show, like other breeds and availability will be plentiful, so there won't be any reason to argue. I suspect then that tsc/ hoover will change the names before long, unless they just like getting a rise out of people! Ha!

I saw this at my TSC and it just makes me mad to see them false advertising.

To be fair, I'm not sure those are their fault. I pointed it out to one of our people at my store and they said that came with a shipment of chicks. They didn't know that there were specifics

Yea I know that, but I just think it’s sad that they are misleading so many people. I’m not blaming it on TSC but I do think that it’s rude for the hatchery to mislead people.

My TSC has an Easter Egger sign label for Easter Egger bins, but are using Ameraucana signs with EEs now.

I've seen the sign 2 yrs ago.

But why all the fuss when hatcheries are selling "Ameraucanas" for $4 each?

If we just called them "show-quality" or "standard bred" Ameraucanas when they really are, and "Ameraucanas" the rest of the time, it might work.

It used to be americanas. Maybe they separated their breeding into true ameraucana and EE's. Otherwise they could be sued for false advertising! Not exactly rare, popular, and at leastt one hatchery is selling from the founder's stock. It's like ayam cemani. So many backyard breeders thinking that they can make a buck with their "rare" but apparently widespread and popular birds. It's going to separate into hatchery and show, like every other breed. Backyard breeders who see $ signs made poor investments. If you have show, people will buy quality for show.

Meyer Hatchery sells True Ameraucanas (Blue, Black, Splash) Separate from their EEs.
Might get some next spring.
