I was doing some research on this because I was both apalled and curious as to how this could be legal.
Here in Pennslyania apparently it is NOT legal!

Title 18-Section 5511
Pennsylvania Anti-Cruelty Law
As of 2/96

(b) Regulating certain actions concerning fowl or rabbits.-- A person commits a summary offense if he sells, offers for sale, barters, or gives away baby chickens, ducklings, or other fowl, under one month of age, or rabbits under two months of age, as pets, toys, premiums or novelties or if he colors, dyes, stains or otherwise changes the natural color of baby chickens, ducklings or other fowl, or rabbits or if he brings or transports the same into this Commonwealth. This section shall not be construed to prohibit the sale or display of such baby chickens, ducklings, or other fowl, or such rabbits, in proper facilities by persons engaged in the business of selling them for the purpose of commercial breeding and raising.

So it must be that way in other states, right?

Maybe the place who is selling them that way can be reported?

My Kids Have Made Leaflets On This Matter after we saved our 3(now 2) little chicks, and have posted them through people's doors in our neighbourhood.
Seeing as, on the easter fest, the pet shop was selling dyed chicks, and i know not many miles away from where I live sell them too, in another town.

So, Everyone Lets Help Those Poor Little Chicks!!!!!!

(We also decided to print out a few of the copies of the leaflets you have made, which is on the main backyardchickens site, part, seeing as my kids one's where more pictures than information, hehe.)

every year around easter time colored chicks go for sale. these poor babies are injected with dye when they first hatch. These brightly colored babies are an impulse buy.Dont you just want one? Read this before you consider it. once their adult feathers grow in, the dye is out of their system and they arent "cute" anymore. They need to be kept at at least 90 degrees when they are as little as the ones in those pictures. And there they are, with no heat lamp, food or water, waiting for some brat to find them in his/her easter basket.then the kid gets bored with it, and the chicken is either killed or banished to a small cardboard box... Please help us save these little babies. These people usually know very little about chickens or how to take care of them. Please REPOST this if you care about the wellbeing of these poor chicks

I have several colored babies right now.... but they were being givin away after easter....

I find it kinda sick to color the little cuties, and so far three of them have died... course one of my normal chjicks died too.... so it might not have anything to do with the coloring.

Those looked EGGACTLY like the ones we saved at the Kankakee, IL swap! They must have come from Ideal. So far, they are doing good, and it looks like they are losing some of the dye.

I also posted in our local Freecycle about taking in "unwanted after- EASTER baby chick & ducks". we'll see if I get any response!

I haven't seen any in my area (thank God) but I have been dropping off little stacks of the postcard size 'Save A Chick' information at the local feed stores.

It is appaling that any state still allows this practice, so hooray for PA and any other state that has adopted that law.
I hate to say it, but boo! to Ideal or any other hatchery for selling colored chicks for Easter (or any other reason). :thun

As far as certain other countries go, this is one fundamental difference between the US and them: We value our children's and our animals' welfare and lives far more than they. Simply cultural differences, and nothing anyone can do about it one way or another.

So when wheat glutten is purchased from China that contains significant amounts of rat poison and is going to be used in production of pet food products distributed in US....sorry... :thun
