Bob, yes you took it the wrong way, so I accept you're appology.
If I had wanted to critisize I would have done so. I just don't find the selling of any animal as a "present" to uninformed people is a good idea. That is how most pets end up in shelters. If it is an informed and well discussed purchase as a family then that is great BUT you will have friends giving them as gifts to kids and parents and grandparents doing the same thing bc they look at a chick and see this cuteness
and don't make the connection that it will turn into this

If we remember who gets those little gifts we might pause a moment. These little darlings usually go to their little kids from the ages of 3 and up. Most of them are in homes not equiped for raising chickens and some are in apartments with no expectation of their survival. they will just toss it when they die like tossing a toy a child gets tired of.
There is a large enough market for chicks to be sold to people like us who love these creatures I do not see why we have to sell to babies with no clue on what to do with them. Even if you pass out pamphlets, that only makes us feel good.
No one wants to take away your income, I would love to buy a few of your little chicks but I cannot becauce of the abuse in the past, and it is abuse, I cannot buy just 2 or three the law (in my area) says I have to buy 6 to discourage buying them as toys. I am not allowed more than 5where ai live, but I don't listen to that, but I can't have 11....
This is a double edged sword and arguing will not solve the problem....Those who are against chick gift buying should discourage that and those who need to sell for income should be allowed but maybe they should consider who is buying them, try to see if it is someone who would care for them. Noone is against buying and selling chicks or we would not be here, we have to find a happy medium somewhere.
P.S. Hooligan, I love your visual that says it all doesn't it?
Chickenduce said, "This is a double edged sword and arguing will not solve the problem"
So True.
"law (in my area) says I have to buy 6 to discourage buying them as toys. I am not allowed more than 5where ai live, but I don't listen to that, but I can't have 11...."
Are You saying that the laws say you have to buy six, but you can only keep five, but you don't obey the law and keep 11? What happens to the extra chick?
Hooligan, glad you weren't critizing, but that's sure what it sounded like. Glad it wasn't.
Laws like the one Chickenduce refered to are why I get worked up on this. I don't want to see animals hurt. Actually, I care more about animals than I do people. Animals give back exactly what you give them, give kindness and get kindness, give meanness and get bite... don't find humanity to be that way, but thats another discussion. If we ask politicians to keep making laws to ease our sensativities thats exactly what they will do and thensome. Chickenduce says in his/her area the law says you have to buy six. What if I want to buy a trio? I think I'm a good chicken owner, but with a law like that I can't, I actually have to buy more than maybe I have room for. And with a law like that if people get tired of their purchase 6 chicks die. So, like most laws these politicians, and I use that word in the most derogitory way, pass it only makes it harder for people to live and makes this society a little worse. Politicians are always on the lookout for some cause to exploit so they can get votes. Voters see a person thats gonna help their cause and they get tunnel vision about this person. And my life gets a little harder, because now I have to jump through hoops to be allowed to do something that our "free" forefathers did as a way of life. If you disagree with this take a look at Prohibition in the 20's. People drank, Al Capone got rich, politicians got elected.
Besides who am I to judge which little kid is gonna to get the spark from that little chick. Maybe that kid is gonna be the next National Champion Breeder, or the scientist that develops the perfect feed, or maybe be just learn how to take care of an animal and give it love. I'm not religious, in the sence most people think, but I believe God said "Judge not lest Ye be judged. Who am I to judge what that kid might or might not do. Also, if I have it right, I think what God says trumps what St Francis of Assi says.
I think that we are wrong to "discourage chicks as gifts". I think we should do everything we can to set an example and teach people what they need. I have not sold any yet, because I'm just getting started, but before I do I will have a plan in place to do my best to insure that people know what they are getting into. I also plan on giving my phone number so they can call if there are problems, and I will offer to buy them back. There's an alteritive motive to my giving money back. You see, when an adult brings me back an abused or negleted chick and wants their money back I'll get to tell them what jerks they are.
Bob

What does that have to do with what you are saying?
St. Francis believed you should show true compassion for ALL creatures, humans included.
There are 3 places where I live that sell birds during the easter time. I post a sign at all 3 saying that if you are buying this for a cute little eater gift and change your mind in a couple weeks call me!! I get calls every year. I get birds (hard telling what), feeders, waterers, and even had one lady give me a wire cage because "She sure wasn't going to need it!". I have kept some of these birds for layers, raised some for the freezer, and found other home to follow bird-a-holics. So all in all it isn't horrible if you can intervene.
Selling dyed chicks and ducks are illegal in Massachusetts. Isn't that interesting. I understand the concern. My folks got their little grandaughter some cute little chics and they all died except one. That one lives in a coop with a dirt floor, no hay or straw. No nesting box, just a childs chair to roost. Not my kid. Our hens free range and have plenty of bedding and sneak into the house.
I'm all for the selling of chicks any time of the year to anyone who wants them.
I'm against giving the government the power to dictate the selling of chicks in any way shape or form.
I'm all for personal responsibility, and holding people accountable for their actions, NOT passing laws restricting all peoples freedoms because some people abuse their freedoms.

You can't idiotproof the world
Are you sure you really think anyone who wants chicks should have them...ANYONE?
What about animal abusers? Or people who could care less that bc they aren't feeding their kids chick it is going to die.
I don't think people like that should own them.
Why is it such a problem if bunchachickens sells chicks? He/she can decide who they sell to, anyone and everyone can buy from a hatchery if they're that hell bent on chicks.
