I'm glad to see you're interested in getting some leghorns, but I've only got the one and she is my best layer... (and her eggs are growing in size finally) Funny thing about leghorns, if you go to the feed stores they're always the last ones left, but I find they're small size and the crazy egg laying capabilities are a great package. I think if I can find a rooster for decent price (and close by) I'll try to incubate me some chicks! I could go ahead and see what a BLRW and Leghorn makes

I think you'll get a great layer that wouldn't make you worry about a frostbitten comb!

Our TSC had them and so did LC, and they were the last ones left.. which means they may not order as many this year... who knows... LOL and as far as a BLRW/Leghorn mix goes, probably a great dual purpose mix, but the eggs would be very very off white (or eggshell!!! ROFL!)

You know what's funny? The leghorn was a chick I got free from some college students at UT who didn't realize the needs chicks had and gave them too me, it was all pullets! 2 were Buff Orps, which I sold and the Leghorn! What luck!

Probably a really pretty sweet cuddly Wyandotte with ADHD.

I forgot about the feed stores and TSC getting chicks in soon. I may try that since she will just be an egg machine for me. I dont remember seeing any leghorns at TSC last year though....

put an old english game cock over your white leghorn (will be called an egg laying white, bred all the time to put some sturdiness mentally and physically, back into the breed), and the hens will be egg machines still, and good foragers and calmer to you, but more chicken aggressive, fly great, and need combs dubbed (which on them will be easy, as ive had them just get ripped off in fences). mate a cockeral from the babies back to original hen, then they will be more nerotic to your liking.. lol though the cocks will be very loud and crow a lot, but decent sentinals and fenders off of preds (even at night, if you keep very low watt bulb in their area). i had the mixes i mentioned and over all were great, but the hen thought she was people and came up to the door and window tapping on and clucking, waking me in early morn for lubbinz and treats, and wasnt great about were she laid, but made nest sort of and made such a fuss about it, you knew! the one rooster was a newsance, aside from best at sentenal duty and would go crazily after hawks, owels, cats, dogs, people he didnt know, if they scared the hens. oh, they will tear your yard totally apart, aside from areas you teach not to go in.

Sorry, I will not own GAME anything, just can't stand the thought! I acctually don't like mixed chickens much either. Thanks for the info though, just not something I will do... my leghorn is not neurotic, acctually decently calm.

yep...we are going to meet sometime next week to try and figure something out. I did not know that Blue Seal is owned by Kent. We may have access to Kent in addition to Blue Seal.

I looked at Kent's website and wasn't as thrilled as I was with Blue Seal's products. It's always good to have more options than you need, though.

I would have said the same thing about games, but you KNOW how much I love Bob, my OEGB. If she weren't free with my order she would never have been in my brooder. If she weren't such a sweetie to my kids (and the random kids that show up at my house) she wouldn't have stayed. She's just the coolest little thing ever.

Your leghorn probably isn't typical because she was raised by you. Imagine if she were raised in an egg production place.

White is dominant, isn't it? Wasn't there a lot of talk on the Wyandotte thread about the need for some good white Wyandottes? It would be more than a couple of generations because they are so far apart type-wise, but it could be something to keep in mind while you are test hatching and waiting for LH chicks to grow up...

See? Suddenly mixed chickens are now "project chickens". :)
