Ahhh... the joys of owning a fru-fru dog...
Snap is a flea magnet and as much as I try to do the granola-tree-huggy-organic thing, I pull out the big guns when it comes to fleas. K-9 Advantix is the only drops that I can use that won't make him sick and kill the fleas and I have to use it every 28 days, even in the winter. On day 29 he's covered in fleas again.
I talked myself out of a big dog... I was in line at the pet supply store to pay for my two bags of small breed dog food for Snap. Twenty pounds of feed for twenty dollars. The guy in front of me was buying food for his dog. The bags said it was for large breed dogs. Two fifty pound bags for eighty dollars!!! AND he was wrestling and sweating.
I think I'll just stick with my wimpy dog and electric fence.
I just wanted to give my opinion and experience on the flea issue. I have always had dogs and cats. The first year we lived in our home in Ohio I had fleas EVERYWHERE... here's what I did. I got the drops to put on the animals. (i think it was advantx?) whatever.. but.. I but the drops on all the animals, then I opened up every window in the house. I sprayed with the in home flea control spray that they sell at the grocery store. I put a bandana on my face and used about 3 cans to cover every room.. every carpet.. every dog and cat bed. After I did that I went back and took down all the drapes and bed covers.. washed everything.. washed all throw rugs.. I know this sounds like a lot.. but I lived there for 10 yrs and NEVER saw another flea and NEVER treated any animal again! When I moved here to Tennessee.. I did the same thing in this new house. I've been here for 6 yrs now and I have NEVER treated an animal and NEVER have seen a flea. I might be wrong on this, but I don't think fleas travel very far. If you get rid of them on your property you can be rid of them as long as your animals don't leave the property and you don't let other animals come on. Our yard is fenced and no animals can get in or out. I haven't had an issue with mice. I have had mice in the chicken coop, but I set traps and try to keep it at a minimum.
