Ahhh... the joys of owning a fru-fru dog...

Snap is a flea magnet and as much as I try to do the granola-tree-huggy-organic thing, I pull out the big guns when it comes to fleas. K-9 Advantix is the only drops that I can use that won't make him sick and kill the fleas and I have to use it every 28 days, even in the winter. On day 29 he's covered in fleas again.

I talked myself out of a big dog... I was in line at the pet supply store to pay for my two bags of small breed dog food for Snap. Twenty pounds of feed for twenty dollars. The guy in front of me was buying food for his dog. The bags said it was for large breed dogs. Two fifty pound bags for eighty dollars!!! AND he was wrestling and sweating.

I think I'll just stick with my wimpy dog and electric fence.

I just wanted to give my opinion and experience on the flea issue. I have always had dogs and cats. The first year we lived in our home in Ohio I had fleas EVERYWHERE... here's what I did. I got the drops to put on the animals. (i think it was advantx?) whatever.. but.. I but the drops on all the animals, then I opened up every window in the house. I sprayed with the in home flea control spray that they sell at the grocery store. I put a bandana on my face and used about 3 cans to cover every room.. every carpet.. every dog and cat bed. After I did that I went back and took down all the drapes and bed covers.. washed everything.. washed all throw rugs.. I know this sounds like a lot.. but I lived there for 10 yrs and NEVER saw another flea and NEVER treated any animal again! When I moved here to Tennessee.. I did the same thing in this new house. I've been here for 6 yrs now and I have NEVER treated an animal and NEVER have seen a flea. I might be wrong on this, but I don't think fleas travel very far. If you get rid of them on your property you can be rid of them as long as your animals don't leave the property and you don't let other animals come on. Our yard is fenced and no animals can get in or out. I haven't had an issue with mice. I have had mice in the chicken coop, but I set traps and try to keep it at a minimum.

We had HAIL last night. About the size of peas.
I made a huge change in my flock last night. I put my RIR , golden comets and Cali Whites up on craigslist and with in an hour They where gone. I was going in a way with breeding. I had 8 breeds. I kept the Ameraucana's, EE's and black copper maran. As well as the kids pet giant silver laced cochin and a Buff orphanington that went broody. My goal is to get olive and chocolate eggers. I found a guy in Trenton, GA that will hatch out my eggs. He is the closet I could find. So I'm collecting my green and chocolate eggs for the next 10 day. I figured since Buffy wants to be a mom I'd let her sit on the cochin and her eggs. Not sure what they will turn out to be. I think the kids should see how chickens are suppose to be hatched. Anyone have an idea on what a Splash Maran roo over silver laced cochin and a buff orphanington might look like.Yard chickens I"m thinking lol. Fluffy onesThis is my roo think he is a birchen splash maran feathered shanks clean toes

Last year was awful. We moved into a house that had been closed up for about a year. In about a month my indoor cats where covered and going into the basement was like a freak show. If you wore white socks they where black. I put revolution drops on my cats and set off about 8 bombs down there. Two weeks later did it again. No more fleas ever! Now we are redoing the house to rent it out. The new place out in the country was not a place you could walk in the yard with out getting ticks and chiggers. Got to love the chiggers! So we got chickens. Not a bug on our 2 acres plus the fields and woods next to us is bug free. I wasn't sure if my chickens would be welcome in the fields and yards around me but everyone around loves to watch them chase bugs and I share the over flow of eggs. Well now we have a lil corgi named Livia who likes to chase the chickens. After all it's great fun. I'm tring to break her of it. She doesn't listen to commands and is too fast and low to the ground for me to catch. She is only 11 weeks old. I kind of went off topic I took the long way around. So we got this little dog who got fleas in my yard. I'm not surprised with the deer, coyote, and other wild life in the woods. The vet gave her a pill called Trifexis. In a couple hours they where falling off dead. It also takes care or heart worms. I had a large dog before and used the drops on him. And for a couple of days had to watch where I petted him. I didn't want to worry about my kids getting that oil on them from a little dog. So 1 pill a month and no wet spot to avoid plus it kills all parasites. as for the chasing chickens I bought a warning collar. But it is way to big. I just have to wait till she is older and try to keep her away from the chickens during feeding time. That's when she gets excited.

I went with this one for 2 reasons. It's .50 per hatched chick not egg and he keeps a web cam up all the time. The drive isn't bad. I'm still looking for black or blue copper maran in my area!

Yes, .50 per hatched chick sounds better to me, and would love having a camera to see everything.. There is a guy in our area with black cooper Maran (hertiage-type) he sells hatching eggs/and chicks, also keeps golden comets for laying. He listed a 10-hole production type nesting box last summer on CL--you might list on Craig's list to find him--my husband knows where he's at--but I don't think he kept the number.

I bought 10 Black coppers last spring from a guy in Chickamauga, GA I ended up with 1 hen. And she has straw colored feathers. But I'm turning my flock blue so I'm not worried about that yet. I am also tring to turn my ameraucaca's and EE's blue with olive eggs. And after this hatch season I will be looking to trade off my splash maran roo for a blue copper maran or blue/splash Amerauacana

I had not seen that... good for Johnson City!! technically I live in Johnson City.... only it used to be Gray!! they are annexing EVERYWHERE.... I hope they never get the city limits out as far as I am, but they are getting close!

Ahh you're not far from us then, we are about to be annexed by Gray, we are county as of right now, but they are pushing to absorb our area too. I'm excited about the chicken ban change, 2 of my friends already told me today that they are getting chickens, the byc virus is spreading lol

I came home from school to find 5 baby chicks in the incubator! Woohoo, now gotta go set up the brooder in the bathroom and will be set to take some photos when they "fluff-up".

Woohoo grats on the babies!
I wish I had my incubator with the 14 silkie eggs here to see what's growing, but my friends 2 girls are so sweet and they have never done this so I'll let them have the adventure of growing their own pets. You bet I'll be over there on hatching day, hopefully rigging up a webcam
