Hope y'all don't mind me joining in! We are in Soddy-Daisy, just outside Chattanooga. Depending on who you talk to, that puts us in E. Tennessee or Middle Tennessee. ;)

We picked up our first chicks (3) and ducklings (2) this weekend. We've spent over a year talking about getting them, made sure when we were buying a house last year to choose an area that would allow us to have them, and were so excited to see the "We have chicks!" signs go up the past couple of weeks. We're mostly vegan, but I do put the occasional egg into my baking projects, and we have plenty of people who will happily take extra eggs off our hands. My garden is big, and I mainly wanted them for their poo! Our kids have been having a grand old time watching all of their antics already.

They're all happy in their brooders for the time being, so our current focus is getting their homes squared away. Luckily, the ducky home should go up pretty quickly (my dad is a whiz with woodworking projects, so between him and my engineer husband, they should make quick work of that so I can get those messy ducklings outside already!), but my husband has broken out the AutoCAD and graph paper to plan out a major chicken mansion. And, to think, HE'S the one who brought up getting ducks in the first place, since he likes them more than chickens. There's only 3 chicks, but we're trying to account for chicken math for next year.

Nice to "meet" y'all! :)

Welcome. We are just a bit up the road from each other. :p Nice to "Meet" you too!

So, I came home from being at my grandmothers and put all my buns up straight from the car. Had a lot in my hands so decided to walk to the front of the house so could drop my shoes on the porch to unlock the door. After I filled up a water bottle for my new babies, I walked out the back door, there is a wild male robin at the bottom of the stairs that starts hopping away when he sees me.. As I walk down the stairs he never flew off just hopped away as quickly as he could. Now, not sure what to do for him. End his suffering before the cat sees him? :( I hate that something must of hurt him.

Is there a wildlife rehabilitator you can take the little bird to? Our neighbor decided to bring us a baby bird that got blown out of its nest during a storm not sure what to do with it so we took it to a lady who deals with those things all the time.

I tried contacting TWRA and one line was busy the other never got answered, it's a grown bird and would be really hard to catch. I just let him be, I doubt I'll see him in the morning. I hate that for him, but they're federally protected species.

The TWRA would have put it down. They are kinda funny about some of those things. I know ours in my county and one in Hamblen Co. We do have a certified wildlife rehabilator here...Lynn MyCoy. She had to fight hard to get this because of how the TWRA v iews "Mother Nature takes care of what is needed." I helped our officer here a few months ago with a hawk that had flown into a guide wire. It was funny to see a big man like Wayne eye a hawk because as he said.."they can be nasty with those claws." I had been sitting with it for an hour or so waiting on him. I ask him if he wanted me to get it..hehe. We packed it up and I headed to Lynns. I always enjoy getting to see her and what wildlife she has on hand. She has a talking crow that was not able to re-coop from it's wing injury who has so much character! She is very open to helping and telling you what to do to help something like the robin. So...she is a contact that anyone can call to see what can be done.

It's on April 7th, if you want to sell you need to sign up and call Jane Hall (276) 690-6583 to reserve your spot. They had a HUGE turn out last month, I was sad I didn't get there earlier. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Kingsport-Animal-Swap/123957167725392?sk=info for more info. Jane advertises VERY well, she said most of the sellers were sold out even before they opened.
Thanks Barbed....I am seriously considering going to it. I was going to go to the flea market to sell my extras but I hate going there. At least at the TSC most people are knowledgeable about chicken breeds. Thanks so much for the information. I will make my mind up in a couple days. I will have to use DH's truck and it is a gas guzzler so...gas went up 10 cents again today....it is getting terribly close to $4 now. Sucks!

Okay, my final incubator hatch was 1 splash, 3 blue copper marans, 17 black copper marans, and 29 maran over Ameraucans,EE's and cochin. Almost every chick came out black or blue. I have 2 yellow/grey chicks with fuzzy feet! The BCM where hard to get a good pix of them. Mostly white fuzzy butts and the one splash. I had to leave the feeders open. One of the chicks got inside and I had to rescue it. So I'll be cleaning feed out a few times a day till they can't get stuck inside.

@TNBarnQueen, I reserved my spot so I will be there BRIGHT AND EARLY this time :D I also recruited a co-worker buddy of mine and we are borrowing her truck so I don't have to pull my hair out trying to cram the boy roos into a honda civic. Thankfully she accepts payment in roosters (and I'm slipping her some gas moola, she just doesn't know it yet)!! LOL! I might have a NN frizzle roo there too, I haven't decided on him.

I cannot WAIT to have my truck finished. Just looking for a old transmission to rebuild and she'll be rolling soon.

Peach those chicks are ADORABLE. Good going on the hatch!!
