Bad news my broody BCM hatched out 4 of 12 then I checked on her about 2 hours ago. She started killing the new ones hatching and pecking at the fluffy ones. So I took eggs and babies away. Everyone is in a tub with a heat lamp. I have the temp up to 98 and humidity @70. One egg is piping. A beak is poking out. Not sure if it will make it. The other eggs I give a low chance. I just need to get me a incubator & brooder. Or a nice one with the bator tray on the bottom. Seeing the 2 dead babies scattered in the nest is not my idea of fun. I guess a 4 maybe 5 out of 12 hatch rate could be worse.

I let the broody out and she is just walking around the yard happy as a clam. Bad mommy! She will not get a second chance at chicks.

I feel your pain. The broody that accepted nine chicks all night and all morning turn homicidal in the afternoon. She killed all but two chicks. One hid in the feeder and one scrunched down behind the nesting box. It had a deep wound on its back. The two are doing fine in the brooder now but there is no way to unsee those poor chicks all over the pen.

I should have checked with Barnqueen first. She said to only let a broody have two chicks to start, see how she does, then add a couple more. I thought I had researched everything but I should have known to ask on here, too.

My little Ameraucana mama is doing great with the one chick she hatched. I only gave her one egg and let her stay in the Ameraucana pen. I thought I would just give her one of the incubator babies and isolate her, but the egg hatched out early. She is great, though. She keeps the rooster and the other girls in line. They all wait patiently for that little chick to eat all it wants of the treats before they approach. They run from it like it's a ferocious predator because they know Mama will be close behind. This is the first time I let a broody stay in with big birds and I love watching them.

Did I mention I raise and shows Dwarfs too? Those girls killed it this weekend too. Cankles the himi got BOSV in show B saturday and the smoke pearl got BOV in all 3 shows up in Ohio.

Don't beat yourself up Daphne..things happen that we just don't realize can. Sometimes it is just a learning process. I have a silkie hen who will all at once start nodding her head sideways. I think it is neurological maybe BUT she is the best little broody I could ever want. She accepts eggs and I have added up to 9 chicks with her. She is a wonderful mother. I had heard that silkies where like this but had never experienced giving them hatched chicks first hand. I looked in today and some where sitting on her back while a couple peeped out from under her wing. The thing I love best about momma hens and chicks is when it is time to eat. She has a special cluck and here they all come to jump in the feed pan.

Ok, so I was thinking Victor Ashe Park, they have a large shelter we can reserve, I have to call before sending the check and form to see availability so was hoping we could all figure out what day, sounds like 4 weekend will be best? Saturday/Sunday? What time will everyone like to meet? I prefer Saturdays but Sunday will be ok.
Saturday works good for me and I think 12 is a good time as well. Gives most time to feed that morning. I will check with DH to see what weekends in June we are home. I know we have a camping weekend planned but not sure which one. I sure hope "someone" brings smoked turkey again.

I will bring cornbread casserole and maybe a dessert.

@Bario.....you have a couple eggs pipped!

Tennesseeckn - if you want to take over the get together and find a spot at Norris, that'll be alright with me. I only wish that the shelter have electricity. Because crock-pots can keep foods warm, and depending on how long of a stay we want it'd help some of us who want to keep our food from going bad, or like me, to keep it warm because that's the way it's suppose to be eaten.

I was just thinking that we were thinking that my area would be more convenient for everyone. If Knoxville's closer, I am all for that. It is kind of a pain having to travel North on I-75... Just let me know. I'll pitch in towards the cost no matter what.

Morning folks. The 1 chick the was struggling last night made it. So I have 5 chicks now. I still have the other eggs under a heat lamp. I don't think they are going to hatch. I had to try. Yesterday we decided to change out our rooster. He is good with the girls and is proven. But, he attacked my 4 year old yesterday as we where catching a stray chick. Yes, we where in the run. Yes, we caught his baby. Yes, the baby started screaming. Then in came LaMar. He left a scratch mark down her face. Thank god we de-spurded him last month. But they have healed up and are hard again. I think a toenail got her. So anyone want to trade a splash maran for a blue or slash maran. I hate to kill him he was just doing what he was suppose to do. But we are done with babies this year and need to mix the gene pool up a little. Or if someone just wants a protective yard rooster? He makes pretty babies. He is a little beat up at atm. I caught him in the pen right after the attack and held him for a while. He cut his comb on the fence. I wanted to check his spurs and kind of show him he isn't the boss. Holding him in my lap and petting him and tending to his wound. The 4 yr old was scalding him then petted him. She was telling him it was okay and his baby was safe. Like he knew what she was saying. But it seemed to make her feel better. This morning he gave me a wide berth and just watch me. Still on alert, but gave me space. He was hatched FEB.2011. Hatched from a farm in Alabama. He was from a #7 egg on the maran color scale. Pretty dark from french standard splash parents.
