Proud momma. She hatched 5, I put one from the bator in with her a week later and then another the following week from a staggered hatch. She is great to watch with the 7 little ones.
All chicks were using the water nipples at 4 days old
She took them outside to scratch around at 5 days old. Incredible to watch the way she does it compared to how much we worry about the brooder temp for a month or more...LOL

@littlechicklet. which hatch?? If you ask around I am usually doing staggered hatches....it is easier for me to do them when I am breeding for a project..
I did hatch out my paint and lavender silkies. They are so adorable!! Then some crele polish. I love my polish but they are mouthy little buggers!

Sorry it was tennesseeckn I meant to ask. I guess I get confused.

Also would like to add the person on Craigslist never contacted me back so I relisted the cockerels for $5 each hoping it will discourage the type of people you referred to. Thanks for the information I did not have any idea people did that. It sure explains why so many people jumped on the ad.

Hey, Littlechicklet,

I think you're looking for me. Don't worry about bothering me, but I have bad news. I had one little splash hatch out yesterday and mama left the nest. By the time I discovered it, the eggs were ice cold. I put them under another broody, but I'm not holding out much hope. They were due several days ago, but I've not pulled them yet.

I'm going to set another batch soon if the girls start cooperating. I got two whole eggs out of seventeen girls today. Four are broody and the rest of KIND of molting. Not enough to justify not laying, if you ask me...

I hope you weren't rushing on the brooder. Looks like you have three more weeks, at least. I'm sorry!I

Yes it was you I was looking for. I think the TN gets me confused & if you change your avatar I am going to be lost! I am sorry about the hatch. It will probably work out best for me.

We are making the small coop for my mother-in-law is a late birthday present (we didn't forget her bday but just now getting started on the coop). I ask my husband today it he thought she would mind if I used it for a brooder 1st.

She is getting some of our EE babies.

So all is well & I will gladly wait. Thanks

Would like to share pictures of the mini coop we are building. I think it will hold maybe 3 EE pullets. It is 3' x 3' less the nest box. The run will be a 10' x 10' and they will free range during the day when they get older and the feeder will not be inside the coop. The nest box lifts out for easy cleaning (you can open the left front door to collect the eggs) & the floor is covered in vinyl. I think we may need to add more ventilation. I will probably start priming tomorrow evening. Top & window not in yet.

I am 35 miles east of Knoxville. I think I am going to be in Dunlap this weekend...will not know til Thur. Then I will be coming thru Chattanooga Sept. 12 or 13.
Cool - well if you happen to come across any bantam cochins please holler at me, Dunlap is very reasonable drive for me.
I am getting so desperate but trying to be patient, so I don't give in and order from a hatchery.
Because my current six (bantam cochins) are getting to that age of startng to do their thing & didn't want them mixing, I relocated 10 mixed to my daughters yesterday into a new bantam "mutt"/nursery coop they built. It was some what heart breaking to take them over there (although they are only 8 minutes away) but there are three White silkies and then 8 mixed cochins. Never really bonded too much to the silkies, although we got them at 3 months old they would eat out of my hand but are still not the lovey dovey things like some of the other little ones. Of the 8 mixed (all @ 2-3 months old) 5 (raised from a couple days old) of them would jump on my lap, fly up on my shoulder etc. just too sweet and I will miss sitting with them several times a day.

I do have 6 laying hens (bought at 5 months old, they are coming around to being friendlier), looking to add a couple more & I have 9 - (one week old) Meek's line, blue and splash langshans & a pr. of SL wyandottes.

Okay, so yes please please keep me in mind if you come across any BANTAM COCHINS (other than blk and/or barred/molted) - thanks

Ok, one of my SG Dorking pullets I got last week is acting kind of funny. I noticed the first day I brought them home all they acted like they wanted to do was go to sleep. Now, everyone runs to me when I bring food, and they eat and drink well. But, I still have one pullet that will occasionally come over and eat, but she acts so sluggish and just sleeps all the time. I can walk right up to her and she doesn't even try to run or get away she just wants to sleep. Also, I noticed her tail feathers look a little different than the other pullets. Almost like her tail feathers are more raggedy or tattered if that makes any sense. Any ideas, I know that doesn't give much to go on I have just never experienced this before. Anything I should try to do for her?

what is the age ?
Look up infectious bursal disease and see if that sounds like it fits the symptoms?
Tired, less food and water, ruffled feathers....thats a tough one. A chicken will ruffle it's feathers as a response to many things; From the very minor to the very severe. Keep an eye out for other symptoms to start ruling things out.
