Quote: Really? WOW. When was it you got her? That new little show in Knoxville wasn't it? I am so brain dead....but it seems like she must have been pretty old when she started laying. I remember hatching her and that she came from a pretty small egg...after that "nada" LOL
oh yea...I remember she was really feisty too because she was a runt and had to keep up with everyone. She always held her own though. You know I still have her mom and she is my "hen in charge"

Egg size question and laying frequency question.

Some of my pullets lay almost everyday.

Some set on the nest everyday but do not lay.

Some are still nonproductive free loaders who just eat, sleep, and poop, all day long.

Kind of like modern day teen-aged humans.

Some lay small ones, some lay mediums, and a couple lay large ( the Barred Rocks).

When will they all settle down to a uniform production pattern?

Well, I've been waiting three years for that to happen.

On the topic of first eggs, my orps and wyandottes don't lay until they are around eight months old. The ameraucanas are usually closer to six, but this year's hatch seem to be dragging their feet. They'll be seven months in a couple of weeks and aren't even checking out the nesting box, yet. The orps I hatched at the same time still look like babies, with no combs or wattles.

Hi bairo, just wanted to let you know that the other pullet started to lay eggs. I have had it happen twice or three times now that the big one laid 2 eggs in a day! :)
The big one also is the one that runs my entire flock, lol

Thats great.... I figured that they were going to have pretty strong attitudes with the way they have been acting since birth. I have heard that before though that if you have a rock hen in your flock that she is generally the one in charge. They are going to be really nice big hens judging by the way they look at such an early age, you should show them in the fall cocke county show just to see what the judges have to say.

I just looked at my chicken and found tiny yellow bugs on them, mostly on their necks, crawling all over the base of the feathers...
What is this? and what I can do to get rid of them asap?
