I have some 4 week old chicks, 3 Black Aussies and 2 EE's. I'm kinda guessing I have a BA roo and 2 BA pullets. I am guessing because the one I suspect being a roo has a little larger comb than the other two and does the "running in your face chest bump". I am sure ya'll have a better definition for that but that sounds like a roo thing right? He is also the bravest, he is the one that checks things out first.
I am hoping the 2 EE's are pullets. I am praying.

Now the thing is, I love love LOVE my EE's so if one of them turns out to be a roo I will give the BA roo away. I sure hope both EE's are not roos! I would have to start over again. Oh my!

Sooo, if things don't turn out the way I want (I'm a Murphy if that is any indication of how this will go) I don't wanna keep doing this! Raising babies I mean, getting attached to them and then having to give them away. How hard is it to find them not quite laying age but old enough to know they are pullets or roos? I know they are more expensive but I am willing to do it to get what I want.

I have decided I only want EE's and BA's.
Go to my pics the link is in my signature line. 2nd page. pics 11,12,and 13 are roosters. pic 14 are hens.
EE roosters are almost always way more colorful even when young. If you cant tell by comb or legs, that is a good indicator for EE's at least.

Well folks, I just about have my 8x8 coop done.

I still have the roof to put on and build the run.

I plan on fencing in about 600 sq/ft with 2x4x72 welded dog lot wire and salt treated 8 foot post.

The total bill at today's cost is going to be around $1200.

My in-laws have given me and old door that is 2x6 as the main entrance.

Going to use the milk white vinyl roofing to facilitate lighting.

The nest box are hung on the outside and supported with kickers.

Some chicken had better shuck out a golden egg every now and then.

Ahh one of the common misconceptions about keeping ducks. Ponds are not required for them, I only use a kiddie pool plus a few deeper water pans so they can fully submerge their heads. Full submersion is required for their beaks in order to clean the nostrils.

@bairo & daphne - Search your feelings. You WILL come to the duck side.
Could you post a photo of how you keep them? I love seeing ducks on the sales list, but my husband keeps saying no because we don't have the pond. He keeps saying "one day." I'd love to show him and scream "One day came sweetheart."

I bet you are happy with the corrugated vinyl roofing.....I always said if I built another one, that is what I would do as well. Of course if I built another one it would have to be bigger than my current one (of course) and probably run me 3000. LOL. This dang chicken thing is addictive. I think It cost me about 3 dollars per dozen eggs just with what I do now which aint too much special.
I keep telling tnbarnqueen I will build her one labor free if she lets me do what I want (just to satisfy the urge to build another one)......but alas she knows me too well and knows I can spend 10 grand on the materials alone for the super duper predator proof chicken palace elite

.

Thermostatically controlled heat bulbs, temp sensitive auto vents, sensor lights and water sprayers on the outside, light sensor controlled steel shutters that close at night, feed dispensers, door locks with thumb print security,.....if someone would just hit the lottery and let me build them one; my life's mission would be complete

give us a pic of those EE's and me or Daph could probably tell you on if they are roos or not
bairo, they are only between 4 and 5 weeks old. Do you think you can at that age? As soon as my battery charges I will get pics of them and put on here a little later this evening.

The babies are here. I met Daphne this afternoon & picked up 4 beautiful babies. There are 2 black & 2 blue. I have one loud mouth in the group. They made the ride home just fine & within a few minutes were checking out the new house. They are eating, drinking & pooping pretty much everything chickens do except sleeping yet.

Thank you so much & I will do my best with them.

Here's a pic of when I first put them in the "brooder"

I promised a pic of the mini coop setup so here it is at my in-laws house. Overlook my father-in-laws prized pick up (he got it for free when the bill was not paid). We are always given the "speech" about how priceless it is if we borrow it for a landfill run.
