yes, thank you for the help. I started to use the heat tape like we talked about, but it was rather expensive and I wanted to try to keep it down in cost. They seemed to like it, so that's what matters I guess. Maybe I can let some of my chicks out a bit earlier than next spring now. I have some 7 week olds that are running out of room inside the house in that 75gal aquarium. I can up the bulb wattage and raise that temp inside there if I do. That is....if the adult Seramas will share.

Are the 7 weekers banty's? If they are LF, they need to be out getting used to the cold by now. I have my oct. 29 hatch out there now with the heat lamp on 4pm-noon. I hope to have them off the lamp by 6 weeks and only on the snuggle tube, unless it gets super cold.

Yes my 4 inside chicks are 2 Silkies and 2 D'uccles. I have been debating sending them out on some warm days to see how they do. I keep those lights on in the coop, so I would think they would be able to try it. They are 8 weeks old Wednesday.

I check mine every morning cause there has been ice in the top of the buckets. We have been getting down in the low 30s and high 20s some nights. None of mine have been frozen yet. I think it is because the chickens use them so often. I usually go thru when feeding and wiggle all of them to make sure they are free. I haven't found one frozen yet. When the weather gets colder and we have problems with wind chill being gets low...I am going to make 5 more nipple buckets so that I can fill them with warm water at mornings and just switch them out. Or...chickens don't really drink water at night cause they sleep. You could empty the buckets and just fill the next morning...but that would be added work.
Now..this is an old remedy for cold but you have to be careful. Indians would take rocks out of hot fires and put in water until it was hot enough to boil. They also would take warm rocks...wrap in cloth or fur and use to warm their feet as did pioneers later on. I have done it camping. So...I am wondering if a person warmed rocks about the size of a large fist in the oven...put in the water buckets with warm water...would that keep them from freezing on cold days. It would keep you from having to go out so much during the day to give warm water on really cold days. Just a thought!
Thanks for the info! Our waterers freeze up often especially lately, just looking for something to save time and not freeze.

Since I was asked...

Opal ? (I'm going to lean towards doe for now)

G/T Black Steel Buck

Also, since they're 2 days from 8 weeks old...

Broken Blue Buck, Chimney Top's Blue Hawaiian Sky

Broken S/T Black Steel Doe, Chimney Top's Lelo

Solid Blue Doe, Chimney Top's Stitch

How are the chickies liking the hoop coop?
I guess they're liking it... lol. They haven't sent a letter stating otherwise. I'm gonna (it looks like) cull a pullet out of the australorp chicks... leaving me with 2, they all look alright, but the one walks around like it's hunchback.. so weird. I'm wanting to combine all the chicks into the hoop coop and it just doesn't look very good.

AWWWW Stang....they are so cute. I still love that blue one. Stitch is adorable. And the black steel buck is a cutie too.

OK....the babies got a day in the sun. It got up to 68 degrees and they got put in a cage and placed in the pen. So after all the hens tried to terrorize them for half an hour, they went in the coop and laid eggs.

And the wee ones settled down and played in the grass under their feet and had a good time. The only major hitch was that Sarge realized there were 2 little roo's in that cage and had to mark his turf. He crowed or squeaked for an hour or so. Then after he couldn't get either to answer him, he relaxed and went about his manly duties with the ladies.

I got 3 eggs for the first time today. One D'uccle and 2 Seramas.

And they have each chosen a different box, so if they stay that way...I can tell who is laying the Serama eggs.

Does anyone know when they update the list for the NYD hatchalong? It said I was registered, but my name still hasn't shown up. Just wondering

Hey Lunar....I have already moved all of my chicks yours came from out to the shed brooder and putting them outside in the sun from 11 - 3. They seem to be doing great. I would post your little roo on the thread here as a pet or find a child who may want it. Will talk more later.

Stang- thanks for posting the pics. They are all beautiful but my heart leans toward the solid blues and black steel as my color favorites.
