Me have an extra roo???
lau.gif
They are 14 weeks old and I have 2 blue and 1 black. I have not decided which one/ones I am going to keep yet. I want to let them mature out some more before deciding. I will let you know once I decide but I can't keep them all. BTW the black one used to be my pet. He would jump up and sit on my leg/lap. He is going through the "I am terrified of you but I want to get close stage" right now. He is very sweet and curious. So I guess what I am saying is he's my favorite as far as personality goes.
I know what you mean about having extra roos.
Actually I sent 4 to camp today and have 7 more with tickets for tomorrow.

We are giving some away for Christmas presents. What could be better than Home Grown Chicken.
Besides every one can USE something to eat, they have everything else.

I was talking to Terry and she said that I should try to find one of Daphne's blacks to add to my line of Lavenders.

I have a pair of Girls that are just about 6 months. Would have to check hatch date for exact age, I do have a black roo the same age. Just do not want to breed brother and sisters.

ETA: I do have some chicks that are almost 9 weeks old if we could work something out.Male and Female

Ooooohhhh... I bet that cross would make some beautiful lavenders!

I was told that I didn't have enough uploaded, so I took some pictures today. I must have taken 500, but 20 or so of them were usable. Most of them look like this...

If there were a prize for capturing chicken butts in their natural habitat, I just KNOW I would win!

I finally resorted to scattering scratch...

This is my favorite girl. Her comb is terrible, but I love her type...

And she can really MOVE!

I have a bunch more on my page, if anyone's curious.

Congratulations on all the new layers. I just got my first F2 orp egg yesterday. Claire is now my favorite!

Chicklet, I have denied it for as long as I possibly could. Calliope is most definitely a boy. Sigh...

ETA: Even with spell check I make spelling errors!

And I think it would be a close call as to which one of us could get the prize for capturing chicken butts in their natural habitat!

I am just grateful for digital cameras: I couldn't afford the developing fees to get my few decent pics.

All of yours are beautiful btw. I can't wait until mine mature out so I can see which one/s I am going to keep & use with the pullets I have. I think they will make some good crosses. I will try to get pics up tomorrow.

Quote: is this correct? Are the current eggs clear of ILT? I know you have read so much about ILT, if anyone would know it would be you.

I really want to get some of your orps, I have heard from many people that you have some of the best out there.
I think that is why Terry said I should get some that you have.

I would really like to have a roo that is 6 to 8 months old. I don't know if you have a list of who you sold chicks and eggs to, that may have some extras.
As a matter of a fact I would also like to have a couple of blue pullets or hens, to go with the Black roo that I have.
Not sure if he is Black or so dark blue that he looks black.

I hatched off 6 from my Trio back in early June. I had 4 males and two females.
I sold two of the roos off and I still have a Black and a Lavender / Blue Roos I also have two Lavender / Blue Pullets.

My goal is to have 3 trios, my original Lav trio, a two trios with a black roo and Lav / Blue hens.

I am putting the Lavender / Blue orpington roo in with my pullets from my cross of a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte and Silver Laced Cuckoo Marans.
The hens have some awesome coloring and I think breeding the Lav / Blue Roo will produce some stellar chicks.
I will try and get some good pictures of them and post here. I have posted some in the past but the pics were not that good.
Stage 3 of this program will be back to a Silver Laced Cuckoo Marans roo.
I am depending on my fellow East TN friends to help advise on this program.

@AJ...all I can say is.......

@littlechicklet.....it would be a great advantage working something out with AJ on swapping orps. His are from an excellent breeder in PA (Harry Shaffer). Adding his to yours will give you a very nice orp with an improved cushion and confirmation. The shorter body of the Eng orp adds a lot to the American....so if you trade out with AJ it is a win win for both of you. Then AJ.....I would breed the black offspring of those future F2s back to Goliath to keep that nice shade of lavender. Then...add new blood to your F3s. The man in PA who bought my Eng Orps has about every type of Orpington you can get. Last I talked to him he was trying to get some imported from England...I think it was Eng. Chocolates. He is a very nice man to work with and Harry Shaffer is mentoring him in his breeding program.

If there is anyone who have and Ameraucana hens or Olive Eggers for sale please send me a PM. I have someone looking for a few.

ILT can't be passed through the egg. But, you know me. I like to be cautious. The danger would be that the virus is passed by being ON the egg, or the carton. That's why I'm out of the hatching egg business.

Here's how I would handle hatching eggs. I would dispose of the carton in a way no one could get to it. I would dip the eggs in Oxine to make sure the incubator's not contaminated. And I would make sure to SCRUB my hands and change clothes after handling the eggs and before I went to feed and water. But, I'm probably just one suggestion away from wearing a HASMAT suit when I'm around birds.

The only juvenile orps I have right now that I don't need are two cockerels from my March hatch. One blue one has feathers on his shanks and can't be used. The other is a spash and he's awesome. In fact, I've thought about keeping him just because he's so pretty.

There's more danger taking a juvenile from here. Everything I've read said that only birds who get sick from ILT would shed the virus and these guys have been kept to themselves. Also, I'm pretty sure my orps have natural immunity to ILT since the adult were all exposed and only the ones in hard molt showed minor symptoms. So, statistically, taking one of them would be fine if you quarantined and used normal precautions. I understand why no one would want to take those odds, though.

I only have one orp laying right now, so it would be February before I have eggs available if things go the same as last year.

It sounds like you've got some cool projects planned. I would LOVE to see some blue laced red orps!

Don't apologize!!! I am a big believer in free range time. Losing one every now and then just happens. I think that if the birds got a vote they would definitely take the risk.

I'd never thought about how expensive these pictures would have been in the old days. I would definitely be more hesitant to push the shutter button!

I think it would be a good thing to work with AJ also but I am going to wait and see how these mature out before I commit to getting rid of any of them. I think everyone on here can relate to letting go of their "extra" cockerels only to lose the one they kept to use. I want to keep at least 2 just in case something happens to one.

I would prefer to add some English pullets/hens to my group in either blue or splash. My very minimal understanding is you cross black to lavender then take the offspring and either cross them to one another or cross them back with a pure lavender. All of this is done to improve the lavender. I mean correct me if I am wrong but I do not need lavender in my mix but I would greatly benefit from English?

Maybe if AJ is still interested we can work something out once I see how these develop if he is still interested. And who knows I may get interested in the lavenders.

Okay my pic day turned out to not be a pic day unless you wanted to see muddy, wet chickens! I did however get a pic of the egg I got yesterday and per usual my skills are poor and the lighting is florescent!

I think she's the one who laid the egg

her egg with the Orp eggs
