Chicklet,

The only reason I was promoting the idea of you working on lavenders is that I like the color. Also, you would totally have to set another pen and I LOVE encouraging others to join the craziness!

Anyone want some Wyandottes? They're totally free and I think there is 9-10 of them, with one being much smaller than the others. I think most are pullets... Mix of Silver Laced, Gold Laced, and Columbian... PM me if you're interested! I think I might have a home for the Australorps, if not they're up on the table too, but there is a 2:1 ratio and cockerels are the 2.
I would really like a regular to have them, that way I know if they raise a breed later on down the road that I want we can work out a deal.. but I'm fine as long as a BYC member gets them.
And before anyone asks, no not getting out of chickens yet, just cutting down to the bare minimum for now until I decide what I want to do. After I lost the money for the eggs and lost the chicks etc. I have been flipping back and forth on whether I want to mess with chickens any more at all. I've also got a bit on my plate looking for a job for my selected field to fulfill my internship so that I can graduate this Spring. I'm concerned the frozen dishes along with taking care of the rabbits every morning is going to be too stressful and I do this without the help of my husband (physically and financially, I get $50 a week to buy everything necessary for all my animals). I'm trying to save up some money and having pens of chickens that only eat and drink and not produce anything is costing me, so I'd like to find homes for the young chickens I have.. I have a lot of money tied up in them, as most people do raising chickens, and offering them free (something I usually don't do) so please someone give them a good home!
Thanks guys!

Thank you she is my favorite (I guess I shouldn't say that out loud for fear of something bad happening to her)

I will hopefully be breeding more this spring.

I agree with the time it takes Orps to mature out. I think a year or more is not an unreasonably long time to wait. I have a blue male that is almost a year old and it has taken him a long time to start looking like anything. He is a nice, though not exceptional, representation of the American lines IMO. If my other males are too young come Spring I may have to use him with the 3 unrelated girls I have (I have a 4th but she may be too young).

Also splash offspring can be achieved by breeding blue to blue (25% splash), splash to blue (50% splash) and splash to splash (100% splash). And of course to get 100% blues its splash x black.

Thanks for your help. I am just a newbie at this so I have a very long way to go & it will be years before I begin to make any progress with my Orps.
My silkies must be missing something. I bred my blue roo to my splash hen all summer and never got anything but blue. I thought there was the 25% possibility but a woman who breeds them told me no....believe me...I tried all summer to prove her wrong! Got A LOT of blue babies though.

I was watching my 2 day old "silkie" chicks (which turned out to be cochin) Sunday and the black one kept doing this funny little squat and squeak thing. I kept checking thinking it was having a poop problem but everything was fine in that area. Lunar was on the phone and when we where talking I described it. She laughed at me and told me it was crowing. I told her "no way". Well...I sat there watching and sure enough...it was posturing just like a roo and it would stretch it's neck out and crow. I about fell over laughing. So..I know for certain what that one is going to be. The other is a little pullet but she looks like she has a silver tint to her. I have not dealt much with cochins...is that a coloration for them? I know there are a couple here who have some. I am trying to decide if I want to keep them..they are very pretty!

Cool incubator, Bairo!

So, by the time you are done, could you have bought a couple of Brinseas, cost-wise? That's how most of my hand-made projects work out...
About 200.00 if I had to start fresh...but I had a few things laying around. I would love a couple of brinsea's, but I would need 2 of these to get the same capacity

Octagon 40 Eco egg incubator with autoturn cradle
USAE42C
$449.99 $389.99

I was just playing. When you mentioned the thermostat it made me think of all of the times the costs of my projects skyrocket out of control at the end. So it's going to hold 80 eggs?

I love my Brinsea, but their customer service it terrible!

Mine are the same way! I should have gotten 25% splash with my orps but every single chick was black or blue until the last couple of hatches. Glad it's not just mine who don't obey the rules of genetics.

Sorry to hear that you are having to down size.
I would LOVE to have Wyandottes again, I also at one time wanted to try Australorps.
I just do not have an empty pen at the moment.

Sending you a PM.

@hobbychicken - Sorry no experience with call ducks here. Have you checked any of their eggs to make sure they are fertile? Also, I have heard call ducks are difficult to hatch. Might try on the duck forums.

@bairo - Nice write up on the cooler-bator. I would assume you could use a smaller cooler using the same build principles?
