I thought the color added was only on certain breeds, ie. BCM for one. Their eggs are dark but you can wash the color off where as say a Welsummer's eggs are dark but its in the shell not a coating.

ETA: some of my EEs have eggs with colored shells all the way through, some not. So I guess my confusion is: If its added how does it penatrate some breeds' eggs and not others?
When eggs are first lain they are a bit pliant. I don't know if that lets the color penetrate better or not. Sometimes colored eggs will vary in color shade. Maybe the glands are more up in the chicken than the site I was reading mentioned. I know a lot of my maran eggs would have scratches on them that where white cause it scratched off the color... I noticed my OE eggs look like they have a very, very light blue tint on the insides for about 6 or 7 seconds then it turns white. I found that interesting. I know if you are trying to figure out who in a flock of pullets is laying you can put food coloring in the vent the night before and it will be on the egg when they lay.

I feel like I am in scholl again! lol The only reason I questioned this is because I researched BCM when I got my mixes. So now I went back to verify what I thought and found these links that may help clear things up.

It seems it depends on the breed as to whether the color is deposited before or as it goes through the vent. Thanks for making me do my homework!

Got a question. Does anyone else have a very annoying/loving bunny? My female follows me around the house and climbs all over me. And do any of you know a vet that can fix them. I think it maybe to late but I still want it done.

I had a rabbit fixed many years ago. It cost the same as a cat. I would call the local rabbit rescue. I bet they could recommend a vet etc.

wow....lol, that is def. a thunder thighs. Columbian Rock cross??

If it is, I did'nt do it....He came from a hatchery which sent WAY too many Roo's (I think I counted 14) so now I am looking to swap 4 of em. The others match up with breeds I got and can use them to make more ie practice my chicken math.

So once this spring hits if the Roo's are ready to do the tango i will have some fertile eggs to hatch

Great idea about the crusher rock and sand. I plan on having someone come out and take a look. I'm ready to get a little backhoe to dig a moat! I am also planning on using some rock Burms and trenching. But I like the idea of the rock and sand also. Thanks for the advice!

How do you keep guineas from wandering away? Are they as noisy and loud as I'm told?
You keep them in a designated area for a period of time, then you let them out in small spurts. Eventually, you can let them range all day, and they will put themselves up at night. Never get a guinea that is older than two weeks old. And they are noisy, but they are so cute to watch. And they make good watch dogs.

I have a question...I have welsummers, Delawares, and Marans coming in may. Right now, they are all pullets. But, I am considering getting one rooster. Which one would you get...or should I not get one at all? I'm torn on the roosters. I love the look of them, and having one around. I am not planning on breeding for any breed right now. When I do, I will separate the breeding pair when the time comes. So, what do you all think? Rooster...no...? I am in it for the eggs right now...and beautiful healthy birds.

The best vet in our area is at UT.

I'm getting annoyed. I can seem to upload pictures now from my phone. Which shouldn't surprise me because I barely have service ever. Any ways I am getting rid of my game hens. Traded last night for a pair of breeding oeg. They serve no purpose but I wanted them because they are soooo cute. Still looking for another female oeg for my other rooster. I don't want to get rid of him.. he's my favorite just don't tell my other chickens.
