I'm in Wash Co, but I called the Animal Shelter and asked that lady about local laws since they are the ones who enforce them here and in JC. I called back again at a different time to ask someone else as well to make sure I got the correct answer. Also, if you live in the Gump add, do you guys have homeowners assoc rules or anything like that?

Oh, sorry. I see that you already got an answer for this. As far as bees, if you want to be sneaky, that should be easy to hide! My backyard neighbor keeps bees, he has those crisscross garden fence things around them I guess to maybe make them look nicer? But if you didn't know what was there, you would assume he was hiding an ugly composter or something.

(But, dang, his bees flood our house. I know they are good bugs and all that, but my kids are freaked out by them. I wish there was a way to have a constant smoke screen between our yards!)

A little update--

I posted awhile back, I guess in the 20s pages of this thread, about being in a lurch with no coops, no building skills, and got a lot of great advice! Sorry it has taken me so long to respond, I ended up having to go to the hosp for a week, and then when I got out I didn't have time for BYC, what with catching up at home and getting the coop built. Mine looks a lot like StangLover's pix he posted. Since I was in the hosp, the man had to come watch the kids, and I guess he realized how bad it was with the chix in the house, bc the next weekend he came by and helped me set in the corner posts, and showed me how to use the saw. It turns out I am really good at cutting things with the saw right on the line, and I was so afraid of it! But I got the wood cut, and then he helped with holding the plywood so I could nail it on. I kinda wish I could have done it all myself, just to show him we can do it

but the kids are just not big enough to hold all that heavy wood. I don't have a real roof on it yet, we just set some plywood across the top with a few nails for temp purposes, and covered it with a tarp. Oh, I forgot to say that he put in the door and window that were scrap I had while I was gone one day.

I have a spot for nesting boxes to eventually access from outside, but right now the lids are just nailed on. I still have so much more work to do. At the end I wasn't even cutting the wood, just nailing patches up over gaps and holes, so it is a little rough looking still. For roosts, I put in an old bunky board frame that we ripped the mattress off of. They haven't used the roosts yet, they are about 6-8 weeks old, so I don't know if it is too early, or if the roosts aren't good. We put in the heat lamps, and it is good to go for now. The chickens are out of the house at least! It may be ugly, but it has survived the weather so far, and now I have building skills to use so I can build a storm closet in my basement for the kids. We had to take shelter down there after the chix were out, but it still stunk from their dust everywhere, and there is still poop we are trying to get up from the concerte floor. If anyone has any tips on removing stuck on poo, I'll take them.

So thank you guys so much for your support! I really needed the encouragement.

Wow~~ You are so lucky to get to spend so much...one suggestion...but this is just my personal thoughts. I would take a little of the money and buy a air-forced Hova which is around 110.00 (what I gave for mine...shipping incl.) Reason being...if something happens to one..you have a back up. Also...makes staggered hatching so much easier when you have one to incubate in and one to hatch in. Like I said..just a thought.

X2

I stagger my hatches, too. I have two LG's for incubating and use my Brinsea with automatic humidity control for hatching. Every egg that goes into lock down hatches.

Well, i will probably not go for the whole $500.00 at this time since I am paying on shed and new bed set. I will be ordering in so am doing research now. At this time I have another broody as the other 2 are rasing single chick out in coop. The one I have in house is doing great. I will be putting that one out in coop later this week.

Bairo I will be hatching mine for other after we have what I need here. I already have neibor that ones some. His boy loves the colors and size of mine since. They have had some bad luck and I will be helping educating them more on chickens. Got alot of back issues of BYP to give them to read.

idk about Maryville but I know after talking to a Knoxville police officer who lives in Oak Ridge I was told that in all honesty I could have 3-5 hens in Oak Ridge as long as they aren't causing a noise disturbance and I am using them for eggs for my own personal use and not selling that the police here in oak ridge can't do anything about it. That being said I am also trying to organize a group of people here to help legalize hens in the city so my said chickens won't be illegal. I also raise chicks for all my coworkers who live in the county but those stay in the house

You are going to love your Hova...I love mine and it is so much easier to clean than the LGs because of the plastic liners. One suggestion that I am going to do. Because of staggered hatching I am going to order an extra liner or two and an extra screen so that I can slip clean ones in between hatches. One thing I changed too after I finally got them clean is to use distilled water. Our city water has so much lime in it..it took me forever to get it off with vinegar. Congrats!

Just wanted to post this over here from the cocke county show thread that "wegotchickens" started.

"Wegotchickens" Wrote: How about we all try to meet at the large rooster statue in front of the barn at 10am?
That thread for the show is here https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=489656&p=2

Also
wanted to say I think that meet up is a great idea, I will be there wearing a bush beans cap over my bald head

Here is a little story for your pleasure.
I have a beautiful SL Polish cockerel. He decided one day to sneak and have a little romantic trist with my black sumatra. It was a few days before I had time to catch him up and put him where he is SUPPOSE to be. Well...4 days later little Ms Mo the sumatra goes broody. (Don't tell me this was not carefully planned) She kicked one egg out that was not good leaving 2. One hatched out 3 days ago. Cute cute little black vaulted chick. Last evening she was off nest but I did not think much...figured she was eating..etc. This afternoon I went in and still not on the nest..walking spradle legged trying to keep chick covered. Of course the chick was not too cooperative. I went over to feel of eggs and they where stone cold.
I knew it was a long shot but I ran in and candled them...one was bad and the other no movement. I stuck it in the incubator anyway..waited 30 minutes...took it out and candled it. First thing I saw was a little beak poking up inside and a little peeping sound. So..back to the incubator and an hour later it pipped. So..not doing the waiting game til it hatches. The thing that confuses me is that for 3 hatches I had problems getting a good percentage hatched. I have learned what most of the problem was now but....here this egg sits for almost 24 hrs....cold...not much humidity...and it tries to hatch!!! Maybe I should neglect mine more.. Go figure!

I will be at the show in Newport but will be there pretty early to set up and sell my chickens. Everyone stop and see me please!! I will be the crazy redhead...can't miss me!
