Everything is almost out of the brooder , got 2 silkies left and in a week the will be put outside to make room for my golden pheasants which r due in 9 days
I have a 3x6 coop. So how many chickens can I keep. Reason I ask is. I went to my moms last night to get a Aluminum trash can. To put feed in. Came home with 3 more Hens. 2 RIR and a Orpington Buff. She had one more Orpington but it looked like a Roo and I don't want a roo. I could be wrong. They are 3 months old. Reason I brought them home was. Not only has the bear been back several times. But when my sis got home more school on Wednesday a Huge Mountain Lion was standing at the chicken cage. Watching them. Moms chickens have been taken care of and are really beautiful. I would have been upset if I didn't take them and then the Bear or Mountain lion got them. We did get our run done. Its a 10x10. Also like I posted before. If anyone has some plastic feed sacks they want to get rid of let me know. Want to make some tote bags for the ladies I work with. They love the one I have. Any kind of feed bags horse, chicken, goat, bird seed or deer feed. Thanks everyone for your time!!!

4- full size birds max for your coop (IMO) I figure a min. of 4 sq/ft per bird in coop and round down on the bird count. 3x6=18/4= 4.5 birds (round down to 4 birds)
I figure 15 sq/ft per bird in a run absolute min. (but I go with more room than most because of the lack of free ranging I can do) I.E. I only have 12 hens now and am using a 70sq/ft coop and a 600 sq.ft run
You might be able to squeeze 1 or 2 more if they have a big run and spend MOST of the time in the run.
follow up...Ive seen as many as 9 birds in a coop your size....but keep in mind you will be cleaning it every other day, will probably have bug problems, pecking, and a higher incidence of other health issues including respiratory problems.
I usually tell people that want chickens to plan for a coop they can afford then borrow enough money to double that. LOL
I got really lucky we had a 10x20 shed that I am using part of now and will probably end up converting the whole thing over to coop next year. I can envision adding on to my run as well to rotate more often and keep the clover and flax growing. I figure my eggs cost me around $3 per dozen when all is said and done. I sure aint in it to save money, LOL
I thought I had read 2 sq/ft somewhere. I wanted to make sure. Well I am at 9 birds. They will only been in the coop to sleep. After they have been here longer. I will let them out in the back yard. We have a chain link fence around the back yard that the coop sets in. I just hope they don't try to fly out. I knew the coop should have been 4x8. I still have one more chicken in mind to get to. Guess I will have to wait. lol
I have no idea if i've posted on this particular thread...but i'm in Mosheim >Greeneville< and I'm happy to see several from the area!!! I'm new to the area as well....coming up on a year!!!!
ugh, my bulb in my bator died sometime after 1am on Friday morning, I woke up late Friday and forgot to check bator on my way to work, came home a little before 1 for lunch and my bator temp was 79 degrees
Was due to hatch this Friday (20th) and had 38 of 40 eggs developing on time. Now I am afraid I may have lost my whole hatch. I changed the bulb and it was back up to 99 within the hour so I am hoping maybe I didn't loose everyone. Anyone had this happen before? Is there any chance I may have some hatches on this coming weekend or think the bulb failure killed my hatch? I am so bummed, I was so excited to have had such a good developing percentage w/1 egg that never developed and 1 that quit with everyone else on track. Any opinions on if it is stupid to keep on and hope some of them hatch Friday/Saturday? or would 79 kill the entire hatch?
and thanks for joining us here at ETN thread. We started this one because there was one for middle and west, but not one for east. It has worked out really well in part due to the tremendous experience of many from east tn and some great advice. We are pretty lucky over here, LOL. At any rate.. there is not a right or wrong thread here, but several threads that apply to diff. situations or breeds. This thread is just a general for our area. Welcome...
