Hey Bairo,

I know you were looking for white layers. Have you thought about attempting Trader Joe fertile eggs? You could really put your bator to the test. You would most likely get leghorns, but you wouldn't have too much money tied up in them to see if they're the breed for you. I thought about picking up some the next time I go to my sister's...

Still going back and forth with a leghorn. As you know I am cutting down to breeds I can keep with the Dels so I know that all my light brown eggs are the del pure breeds. I have an OE and a couple EE's and thinking about a white and a couple wels. That does sound fun though to see if I can get a decent hatch rate out of trader Joe's

Wait to you see my crazy new incubator,

I'm going to the dump tomorrow to pick up the housing for it I saw today. I almost came to a screeching halt when I was driving by it, and now my wife is certain I am a complete psycho....My step daughter has learned to just roll her eyes and keep quiet

Let me jump in on the Welsummers... I have two... Their eggs aren't that dark. I have Wheaten Marans which are MUCH darker. I would never pay $30 for a hen that is probably half spent... unless it's a rare breed and, to me, Welsummer isn't rare enough for that justification.

Just my two cents.

Don't make me go back and find the answer... do you want to breed them or just have hens or what?
They have wel chicks for 5.00 and I would give that for a couple (if I was able to pick them) since Wels are fairly easy to sex. I don't know about 10-15 for the Marans chicks though unless I saw about 50 eggs and they were consistently almost perfect in color

I didn't know people could get nominated for those things!

LMAO... yeah. Real bada**. LOL!!! Now, THAT is funny! Sorry, but you are a genuine nice guy. You should go with it! lol

Welsummers are good birds, and their color is good for free ranging... but the Maran has a much darker egg. It all depends on what you want.

Leghorns are good in moderation. They are flightly and I sold all mine but wouldn't mind having one or two... I prefer the light brown's, though. Again, better coloring for range.

oh and one other thing.... Who nominated me for BYC friend? I have a reputation to protect as a non friendly hard a** ,you know.

lol. on a different note: (Stacy) How about 75.00 for an unsexed day old chick? Now that is really getting up there. Blue Isbar from Greenfire. I think they are going to end up sexing them out at 90 for a pullet and 40 for a roo (day olds)

I thought the Flower hens were spendy, whew!

Found my REW doe, Nella, pulling fur this morning when I went to feed and water. Will be getting babies soon!!!

I would spend that for the right bird... but no interest in a Isbar ... matter of fact, all "__bars" are just crosses from what I have learned. Much like our hatcher sexlinks or various hybrids. In England they just call is a Isbar, legbar, ect ect --- so no way in Canada (get it lol) I'm going to pay even $5 for one of those. Now, watch it become the new "it" bird and remember I'm back here shaking my head at the people for paying high dollar for hybrids

Well, heck! I could have saved some pages of posts here.... I'm thinning out my flock and can emotionally handle selling one of my Welsummers. She is about a year old... they both are... they are sisters. Really pretty, but I don't eat eggs and really don't need a eatting egg flock of 40+ so I have been selling pullets and young hens here and there to people I know are worthy of keeping chickens.

Where is Helenwood? I'm down near Athens, TN

That's a good ways from me. I don't know when I will be down that way. You said wheaten marans have darker eggs. Do you have one of those?
