Too bad that Roo of yours is not carrying a blue gene. Hint, Hint. I don't know if XW will breed for that or not? I know he would not let them near his regular stock. I need to call him and see if they are getting any splashes or blues.
No, this boy is from a closed line going back to the 1800's.... he isn't crossed with anything.

So I suppose you are getting blue barred rocks? Didn't Nella have one? I'm pretty sure she had one for sale a long time ago that I thought about getting for the fun of it. Then I woke up and realized the last thing I needed was another project.

Oh no...I did not mean to imply he should not use him. I was only stating what I see in response to what those so and so's over at the Marans thread would say. Absolutely breed for the standard, especially the French standard. Hopefully before the genetics get worse, someone will bring in new blood.
Oh ok... I re-read your last sentence and got what you meant.... the first time it sounded like you meant cull THIS ONE immediately.

Got to work with what you got, and in America, with alot of breeds, one line is all we got. I still say those who tell you "don't use him" and then ask for eggs or offer to buy him are obviously just jealous. Grrrr. ;)

One reason why I started dealing more with breeds that have no SOP in America... I got tired of the know it alls belittling everyone's birds... it's not even productive comments, it's belittling. The birds I breed that DO have SOP, I can show anywhere and win (not bragging, really) but if I put a pic of them on their breed thread on here I would have everyone who has one in their yard telling me what all is wrong with him/her and next thing you know I would feel lousy about it and just give up. Yeah, I'm still upset. lol

Someone needs to post some pics because that kitten is looking at me over on the right side.... she is like, "oh, please let me play with your toes... take me to your house" and I'm thinking "NOOOOO" lol.

She is a cutie with that black spot on her chin.

Hobby; Stacy is absolutely correct. Don't let them get you down. I get fired up too and was more stating what I would like to tell some of those people about the breed just to get a rise out of them. The great thing about breeding him to different types is that it is not like you are going to change his genetics if it does not produce what you want...you just try breeding him to another with different traits. You should be able to find the right combination and produce some more good birds. Now as far as letting any non standard offspring out into the world, that is another matter. But hey... most of us like chicken soup.
I am not going to sell any as marans until I figure this all out. If someone wants a few just to have chocolate eggs then they will be told they are not for anything other than the colored eggs they lay. The more I have read the more I am unsure if I should tackle bcm. You are not the first to tell me that they are really messed up as a breed. I also wondered about the clean legs myself. Thanks for thank info. I have considered going with Euskal Oiloa's they are a gorgeous breed as as well.

Yes...I got several eggs from a B-b Roo over barreds and splashes. So I am hoping to get a large percentage of Blue and Barred that are carrying at least one blue gene. It is funny that the Blue Plymouth has actually been around for a while and just never really caught on that well it seems.

I never paid a lot of attention to Plymouth's in general I guess mainly due to so many being out there; but I find the longer I'm in this, the more I care about other traits. All the Plymouth's are beautiful birds, but when I saw that Blue I almost fell over.

I did not know Nella had a blue??

He was a blue barred... I never saw him in person and so I'm not sure how blue. I'm not even sure I even got so far as to see a pic.

I like the Plymouth Rocks... they are good all around birds. I have stopped myself from getting whites and reds before... if you get blues going maybe I can get a little of all three and have red white and blue flock of rocks. LOL! Seriously, that would be cute. Not breed them, but just have them.

Duck Creek Poultry Place.... look them up. They can help you with Marans... they breed Wheatens but she has a degree in biology (I believe) and alot of genetics and YEARS of showing experience. That would be a kind person I would gear you towards for real mentorship on Marans specifically.

I will look them up. And thank you

Stacy

I have a few "Super Blue" eggs also.
Lav. Ameraucana over white leghorn. But that was just for the heck of it...I actually got rid of everything but 5 favorite hens in preparation to just concentrate on the rocks. Even the other few cross bred chicks I have coming up will probably be sold cheap at Newport Show.
