I have 2 groups of silkie eggs coming. I FINALLY found some Columbian silkie eggs. I an like thchicknut...I like the out of the ordinary. I am so excited!!! I see a new project in the future next spring. After these eggs I am shutting down for a month or 2 then starting back in Feb for 2013 season. I don't know but AJ has one of the large incubators so he may have beat me on numbers.

I love Meyers too. They are the only one I have ordered from and I was very happy with my order. I hated having to order 25 chicks but I split it with a friend. Oh...I am also looking for some adult ameracaunas for a friend. Is everyone else having low egg numbers? Out of all my hens I am getting 1 olive egg a day. Bummer

I am bringing to sale at the Newport show....Belgium D'Uccles, some Crele Polish, silkies and quilt signs for hen houses. If anyone wants to pre-order a certain pattern for the quilt squares let me know. I hope to have hand-made soap if I can get it aged enough by then.
OK...I tried to consolidate my posts into one. Did it work?

I will have you know that I have been under control this year. Even with the big incubator I have hatched less than 50 eggs this year. Whoops make that 125, I forgot about the 75 barn yard bantams. Early this year I decided to wait till fall and winter to do my hatching, mainly because for the last couple of years I was feeding between 150 and 200 birds all winter with a feed bill that was W O W (way outa wack) I decided that this year I would hatch late and have lower feed bills, (chicks and juvies eat A LOT less than full grown) and would be able to sell mostly POLs in the spring. So I have started setting on the first of the month from hear to spring with the exception on a New Years Day hatch (BTW we need to have a NYD between ourselves).

I will have some Easter Eggers (I never call mine Ameracaunas because they are not pure bred) at the Newport show along with the other stuff I listed earlier.

Egg count per day "JUST PLAIN LOUSY". With all the hens (10 Pens) I have I am only getting 3 to 4 eggs a day. And most of what I am collecting are for the bator.

Every pen has 2 feeders, one has either 16% or 22% layer pellets in every pen with adult girls.
All the pens with adult girls or POLs get a feed called JJ Juicer a 14 grain (? I think its 14) feed that comes from Johnsons feed mill in Tazewell.
The pen with cockeral's gets cracked corn and the 4 grain scratch.
The two pens with Juvies are still getting starter and 4 grain and cracked corn, I swap out.
I do have one pen that gets what I call scrap feed. Once a week I pick up everything from all the other pens add in some cracked corn and feed it to
a group of 14 birds (about 5-1/2 months old) that eat about 1-1/2 gallons of feed a day.

good luck getting the soap ready.

"consolidate my post into one" Dang girl, I don't think anyone on here has EVER covered so many subjects in one post.

Does anyone ever look at the box to the right, the one that shows who is online?

We have had 3 Danes. The best guard thing we ever had from them was their size & bark. They tend to intimidate most people but ours were not mean. Ours we very comical and big babies. I think I have mentioned how dh says I coddle them too much.

We decided against ever getting another one due to their short life spans & soooo many health issues associated with some breeds (hips, joints, cancer, bloat, etc). I can get on my soapbox when it comes to AKC, popular breeds, line breeding, etc.

Here's what I would consider: how old is it, what sex (will it mix well with yours), has it had any basic obedience training, is it house trained (in my mind they are not outside type dogs), any health issues (they can cost a small fortune) and is it an Alpha type dog to name a few.
I currently have 1 dane and had two at one point. Pretty much 2x on everything Angie says. I will add that the male I owned was fairly protective. He chased off a couple of guys selling meat in the back of their pickup and bit someone who got too close to my wife asking about air conditioners for sale. He also did a good job of keeping strays away from the property, along with coyotes.

That is my thing... what is it's personality like. There are three to choose from two girls and a boy.... all of them are black but one girl has a white spot on her foot. I don't care what color they are, so I asked which one is the most laid back, and they said the girl with the white. I can't have one that tries to be dominent... Greta wouldn't allow it, and to be honest... I wouldn't allow it. I'm alpha and Greta is beta and that is the way it is. I don't want to go into it too much, but Greta knows "left, right, stop, go" and I can't have another dog taking her over.

Which brings me to the next point. I regularly hike with my dogs (thus the left right stuff) and I have Greta trained to be the leader in the woods but behind me on the street.

The vet costs and short life span are a concern. Plus the eating.... the owner says they eat 40lbs a week.

As for how old... they are just 9 weeks or so... like I said, two boys and a girl. He CLAIMS they are potty trained but don't they always say that?

Here is what I want in my next big dog... I want a big dog who will be gentle until needed, at which time, will proceed to tear a intruders arm off and eat it. As far as looks go, I prefer mastiff type faces (mush mouths, I call them)... and preferably one who can be outside 75% of the time guarding the property. Watching livestock is a plus, but not exactly nessicary as I would always be able to get a LDG specifically for them.
I love my dane he has been raised around the chickens and goats and has never tried to hurt them. He does sometimes chase the goats becasue they give him that look like come and get me and start bucking and running. Mine is a big baby that thinks it's a lap dog. Not very hyper, but man their tail will take you out. I have had 3 all boys and 1 died at about 10 years old. The one I have now is about 6. Mine wouldn't really hurt a fly, but barks like he would. And the size and bark alone is enough to scare anyone that would come around. I love when new people come over and they stop dead in their tracks when they see him. I do know that if someone was tying to hurt my family that he would bite them. Overall a very gentle breed with great personality.

Grawg or anyone

Did you say that you raise meal worms?
I would like to talk to someone who actually does them.
I tried to read on the forums but they are so off subject that I seem to get lost.

I have run "adblock" for such a long time that I forget that how I see the site or what I dont see....is not how most others see it. I have it set so all I see is wall to wall thread. No ads, no extra stuff.

When we had our dog Penny, she was a GP. Her bark was very loud and it would scare people.

Even though the only way she would hurt you was to lick you to death.

If someone was visiting and I did not know them very well. I would hold her by the collar and she would play along like she just want a chance to eat someone up.
I really think she knew what I was doing and she liked to act like a Bad *ss even though she was a big baby.

Her only bad habit was she also liked to "PLAY" with the chickens. She would lick them and play with them and would sometimes play too hard and accidentally kill them.

She never killed one just to eat it. But if she did kill one, when it would quit playing with her she would eat it.
That is what I think led to her demise, I think she may have punctured something with a chicken bone.

We lost her last Jan. was a loss of a great big baby doll. When she stood on her rear feet she stood about 6-1/2 feet tall. and lovable as could be.

Quote: Tibetans especially...but all the Mastifs are fine if trained well with the flock they are protecting. You just have to start them very early with the flock so you can spot any prey drive that needs to be taken care of. Of course this is with any LGD. My step father has a male and female GP and although both his are as good as you would expect the most popular LGD to be, his neighbors had to be gotten rid of due to a high prey drive. It can happen to any breed. I have a German Shepherd and have owned 4 plus a Belgian in my life I love the breed. My current one is a bigger baby than any I have owned, but his prey drive is too high to leave him out there with the chickens unattended. Since we rescued him at 5 months of age..it was already too late to train it out of him since prey drive is a very deeply imbedded trait. If he sees danger he will ignore the chickens and eliminate the threat though, LOL So picking up a rescue no matter what breed is not a wise idea for a LGD. They really need to be out with the flock socializing and bonding by 8 weeks of age IMO. If we needed an LGD, I would probably look at an Anatolian or a Komondor (if I could find one)...but that is really just a matter of what I like.

Ok guys, I need to find someone around here that I can get Black Australorps from. As always, no hatchery birds wanted. My Australorps are great but I need some diversified genes- several of my chicks from my last breeders apparently were inbreed too many times from previous owner
