Make the larger one out of 5 gallon bucket. Only put 2 gallons of water in. Hang a heat lamp so it is just even with the top of the bucket and plug it into a thermocube. Mine never hit it hard enough to make a splash that would come close to reaching the lamp. As long as the lamp is secure enough to not fall into the water, lol

If you want more security, put in a GFCI in place of the regular plug. The most that will happen is it will trip the GFCI if it ever fell in or got wet.
What do you think about using fish tank heaters?

I can find those for about $7 apiece

I have to find something to make about 20 of them.

I have a 5 gallon one with 4 nipples in it that I use to use on the outside in the summer before I moved to the 2 gallon buckets. I'll bring it to the show if you want it....$10.00

How about a trade for the small fridge?

My father in law tried fish tank heaters and they seemed to do ok just for a season. But his were running all the time because it gets so much colder up in Mountain City. Also the lowest you can set those things is 70 degrees...but if you plugged them into a thermo cube it would work and not wear them out as quickly plus not burn a hole in your wallet from the electric bill.

Sounds good to me.

So are you making a brooder or an incubator?
incubator if it is big enough to make it worth it. Otherwise my next project was going to be the huge coleman 120 qt. cooler with heat tape and a digital proportional thermostat. I did some testing and could hold less than a 1/2 degree variance.

I think I like the ideal of the bulbs, and on the thermo cube on GFI it should work pretty good.

Anything would beat freezing weather @ 7 in the morning and 6 in the evening dumping ice and refilling with water for 20+ pens.

I have plenty of buckets and lids to hang the light on, so all I would need to buy would be the nipples.

I have a dozen buckets to make, but I'll bring what nipples I have left over to the show.
Since you have so many...those thermocubes aren't cheap. Maybe a cheap analog timer might work as well. It would just involve more work getting it set for the right hours when it is going to get below freezing.
