I am not a poultry snob but I have not ordered from a hatchery in many years. I just thought if I wanted quality I would have to find an individual breeder which I did for the Orps. I have some older hatchery chickens mostly my EEs and truth be told I really do not need any more birds. I plan on working with what I have & thinning down sometime next year after the Orps have matured out enough for me to decide which ones I want to keep.

I am with AJ: I am not saying it can't be done but I don't see how an individual has the money, time, housing, etc. to keep up with so very many chickens.

@ dncarr09- that's it! Duane Urch is the breeder
@ talbott poultry- That is what I thought but, I have only heard good about him, there were a couple of chicks I couldn't find from anyone else so, I wanted to give him a try.
Awesome, I can't believe I got that. I knew when I saw it that I had seen that before, and looking at the breeds I put the clues together. Yes, I have heard that he is amazing and that he has some of the best birds. I think he pretty much has devoted his life to it. I also think that he is a big poultry judge. He's pretty old from my understanding. I have talked to him and his wife. Very nice people.

I know it would be so hard to do it right and have that many breeds. I think that is all he and his wife do. Look at the old couple that run Sand Hill preservation center. I don't know how you could do it either. But, I have heard only great things about him.

It sounds like neither one of them are what I think of when I think of hatcheries. I think of Murray, Cackle, ect. and I guess even though they have large numbers of birds its not the same. I am sure there are people out there that dedicate their lives to the betterment of certain breeds whether it is one or many. It sounds like you are making an informed decision & that's more than I done my first time or so around. Please post as to how it goes & who knows I may eventually be in the buying market again.

I have been so looking forward to this show for months.

I may sneak off and be there about 8:00 AM.

to get to look at the birds and make my deliveries.

I may ask Rodney or Terry to hang onto the Seremas for Beth till she gets there.
I know Rodney will be there EARLY so his will not be an issue.

Terry only lives a little ways from me so maybe she might bring back my meal worms.

After all I'm not needed in Jefferson City till 5 pm.

Hey AJ...no problem. I am so sorry for your loss...I am like Rod..I try to dwell on the happiness they have rather than my loss. But we are human and it is human to be a bit selfish and want them back...Just bring the chickens to me for Lunar and I will pick up your mealworms from Stacy. If there is anything else you need just let me know. I will PM my number to you in case you don't have it. I think Rod will have our spots...right??? *doing puppy dog eyes* For some reason my rear hatch window won't open on my blazer..man I hope I don' t have to drive the dually. It takes a 10 acre field just to turn it around. I should be there by 7. I am considering cooping Fri. night.

@hehe....I know what Stacy looks like! We have done the roadside/parking lot chicken sales a couple times> Sending you a PM.
@ DAAPHNE!!!!!!!!!!!! Your coming aren't you.

The only reason I would buy from a hatchery is for a breed that I want to grow out to butcher...which is what I did. I am not a chicken snob either but.......You won't be able to get the uncommon colors and patterns from hatchery stock. True it is costly to buy from breeders but you are going to be more happier with what you get. I have paid out a lot for eggs this year to have the breeding stock I want to introduce for 2013. There are still a couple colors that have to be worked on and wait til 2014 but that is the fun of it. I am not patient and I have to really work hard on waiting to get what I want.
There are some breeders who sell adult chickens but if they are not common...they are costly. But it only take a hen and a roo!

yea...I got the spots. Just trying to get my head straight next couple days. Woke up this am to a dead clothes dryer, then Kim called me and said the Envoy "not charging" light came on. 10 minutes later she called to say she was broke down. Don't ask what a new alternator costs for that vehicle

Hey guys,

Sorry I've not chimed in for a while. I was feeling sorry for myself for not being able to go to the show.

AJ, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I'll be praying for your and your family.

You all know that I a a big fan of birds that come from breeders, but I have to say that my SLW are making me see the value of hatchery birds. When the ILT hit that pen my two 4-year-old Tractor Supply girls got sick, but not anywhere near as bad as the breeder girls did. Their faces swelled and they definitely didn't feel good, but they never struggled to breath and they never looked like they were even close to dying. Four of my five breeder birds died and the fifth one was close to death for twenty-four hours.

My TS girls also lay better even though they're two years older AND their eggs are a LOT bigger. And their eggs are always fertile. My other girls' eggs never had better than 70% fertility. When I shipped them, it went down to 5-10%.

So, I am going to use my two TS girls and try to find a few other hatchery girls and work some fresh blood into my flock. I know I'll sacrifice looks for a while, but I'm not showing, so I don't have any pressure to make them back to standard too quickly.

Have a great time at the show! I was a dummy last time and let my daughter wear her coop boots to the show. It didn't cause what happened to my flock, but it was a really dumb thing to do. Take lots of pictures. I'll be thinking of you guys and miss getting to see y'all.

There is a very reasonably priced place Johnny gets a lot of parts from when he does mechanical work (His side job). I will ask him tonight what it is. They are pretty quick in shipping too. What model is it and I will have him check to see what he can get it for. Also my uncle is a manager at Auto Zone in Morristown and he gives us his discount.
Got your cage ready. I had hoped to come to Newport today cause I had a dr. app in Severville but they changed my app at the last minute....for the 3rd time!

I've got it cleaned and ready. You want me to put hay in it when I bring it Sat?

@ AJ - Sorry for your loss, thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

@ dncarr09 - I got my first birds from PH. I can say that they are healthy birds and I haven't had any problems with them. The man I dealt with was pleasant and friendly enough. However, hey don't breed to standard according to a forum post I once read from someone that worked there. I would tend to agree with that as none of the birds I bought would be anything close to correct body type. They only slightly resemble the specified breed.
